Parkas are handed out for 30 degree summit. I brought own vest,
scarf, hat, gloves as well. Part of road to summit very bumpy.
Worth the trip. Beautiful Island landscape & informative driver of
4 wheel vehicle. Sunset amazing.

“Awesome View..Don't Miss it if you come to the Big Island”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

We went with a paid tour that cost me and my wife about $350. We had a Jeep but were "advised" not to drive. Don't believe it. I have taken my 2 wheel drive Ford Escape on rougher terrain. Save your money and drive it yourself. Bring lots of water, warm cloths...it was about 40 degrees in April and the wind was blowing. But the view is incredible. Due to cloud cover, we did NOT get to see a sunset, but, the colorful clouds and the sun peeking through were fantastic. Our "guide" did give us some interesting info on the way up, but nothing that can't be learned on the Internet. Stop at the Visitors Station about 2/3 of the way up and get used to the thin air. MANY people up there got light headed so be careful. Everyone MUST come down at dark so be prepared to drive down a steep unpaved road in the dark. Plan on arriving at the summit no later than 30 minutes before sunset and leaving after sunset. After dark, go back to the Visitors Station to do some stargazing. They have a few small telescopes set up. We got to see Jupiter in two of them. If you go with a camera, be sure to bring a tripod to get the best shots of both the sunset and the starts.

“Do it yourself, no tour needed”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

The views from summit are beautiful and it is quite an experience to see sunset from 14000ft and the stars from the visitors center at 9000 ft. But if you can sacrifice the sunset experience then you can do this yourself since it is a easy drive to the visitors center but to go beyond that you need a 4 wheel drive or go with a tour company. You can't stay at the summit after sunset for star gazing, you will come down to the visitors center for that. The visitor center has free tours once you are there and there are people who can answer questions for you. They also have telescopes set up for you.

My husband and I took the tour to the Summit with Hawaii Forest & Trails coz we were very excited about this and were hoping for this to be the highlight of our Hawaii trip. But we felt that you can do this yourself and we wasted our money on this tour. I will start by saying the good things -

What we liked about the tour -
- Our guide was a good, knowledgeable guy
- They set up their own telescope
- They give you jackets and gloves to keep warm

What we didn't like -
- The day we went it was cloudy but it was beginning to clear up but we didn't get to stay long enough to let the sky clear up.
- Our vehicle was loud and felt old compared to other vehicles they had
- Food was tasteless

“One amazing place "out of this world"”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

This has got to rank as one of the most spectacular places I've visited.
You're almost 14,000 feet up, and 6000 feet above the clouds, in Hawaii, where the temperature is zero, with snow on the ground.
Bloody amazing...

“Amazing view”

Fantastic view from the top. Make sure you are well covered though as it can get very very cold up there.
Did the tour through Hawaii forest and trail and really enjoyed it.
