We thought going when the moon was a small crescent would be good. I have to say after reading other reviews I was a little disappointed with the star show. Saying that the people at the visitor centre are very informative, pointing out the different constellations. The drive up there is pretty easy as long as you have a four wheel drive as most of the road up from the visitor centre is rough. If you're hiring a car whilst on the island it works out a lot cheaper to hire the four wheel drive than book with the companies. There is no fee other than a donation.

It was a long bumpy ride and very cold and windy but the views were worth it. And a chance to see all the domes housing world class telescopes gave this nerd a huge thrill!

We happened to visit on a clear day so our views of the sunset and the stars were great. Our guide was an odd sort of person, but knowledgeable and friendly. The biggest problem with the tour is that 5 of the 6 of us were so darn COLD. (The 6th one brought a down vest and quilted jacket which he wore in addition to the parka that the company gives you.) So, if you go, BRING EXTRA SWEATERS etc. or you will be uncomfortably cold. The second problem is that you spend A LOT of time on the bus. We were split on whether or not it was worth it for that reason. lAlso, you may want to bring your own food as well. Dinner was awful.

The views above the clouds were beautiful. We saw a little snow on the ground, too. Roads were all clear. We didn't stay for the sunset or stargazing, but it would have been incredible. And incredibly cold . . . We were in shorts.

Definitely a ‘must do’ on the Big Island. Being from Colorado, the drive up was no big deal. 4WD isn’t necessary. I think it all comes down to weather and conditions (the University of Hawaii has a website that shows up to date road conditions. Just search for “Mauna Kea road conditions”). Conditions were great on the day we went up. The road is well maintained. We were driving a 2WD Chevy Impala with a pretty big V-6 and had no problem. There are only a couple short steep portions. The sunset is beautiful and all the observatories are impressive and other-worldly. We left the top shortly after sunset, so it was pretty light still on the drive down. We stopped at the visitor’s center where several amateur astronomers have set up big telescopes and were happy to talk about the night sky. (Don’t be a goober: make sure to turn off your headlights if you’re near the visitor’s center at night!).
