Visiting Mauna Kea on April 3 this year was the experience of a lifetime. With unseasonably cooler weather that week, there was SNOW on the peak. We rented a 4WD for that day only from Harpers (as is suggested) and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon on the summit. My husband hiked to the highest peak in the snow. The views were exciting and sunset/moon rise never to be forgotten. We saw skiiers and snowboarders. I was happy for the warm clothes and hiking boots were changed into at the Visitors Center and my warm woolen hat! After dark, back at the Visitors Center, there were star enthusiasts gathered, telescopes to look through, and experts on hand to talk about what was "up" in the heavens that night. Such a complete delight. No one should miss this schizophrenic experience in Hawaii!

This was perhaps our favorite activity of our big island vacation. We used Mauna Kea summit adventures and highly recommend them. We were a bit worried about weather, but there was a beautiful sunset on the summit. Vans had huge windows that provided great views on the ascent. I was glad we wore pants and a few top layers, and the parkas provided by company fit well.

We did get back fairly late, and it would have been better not to have scheduled an early tee time the next day. Still, we highly recommend this. Guides pleasant and entertaining.

Anyone can drive up to the ranger station, 6 miles north of Saddle Road on Mauna Kea, but it takes a 4 wheel drive vehicle or sturdy hiking boots and cold weather gear to climb to the top. You are required to watch an orientation video and time you journey carefully to avoid getting into trouble at dusk. Alternatively, you can sign on with a tour group who will not only get you there and back, but feed you as well. Takes all day.
The drive is through lovely green, rolling range lands with cattle and goats.

Amazing that you can find snow on a tropical Island at Mauna Kea Summit more than 13,000 feet above sea level on Hawaii's Big Island. Definitely worth the visit which we did through C Big Island with Greg Brown as our guide for the evening. The view from the summit is magical across the top of the clouds watching the sunset. Temperatures below zero Celsius at the summit so ensure you dress very warmly - artic jackets are provided by the tour company. Dinner on the way up and a warm chocolate with Brownie on the way back down were provided.

On descent we set up a telescope for a guided tour of the constellations with the best views of the night sky. Was worthwhile with the tour as the guide was extremely knowledgeable.

Great tour.
