Felt we had landed on mars when we reached the summit of Maun Kea. The color of the dirt and all the domes seemed liked we were walking around some base camp on Mars.
Make sure you spend time at the visitors center to acclimate because you will feel light headed when you get to the top! Higly recommend gong all the way!

We had a 4x4 so we made the drive up to the summit. People say it's dangerous, but I didn't think the drive was dangerous at all. Just exercise common sense and you'll be fine. The sunset was beautiful, but it gets COLD so dress warm. After sundown, the visitor center brings out their telescopes and you can stargaze with the staff members. It's amazing how many stars you can see from here.

It is well worth the drive. Be warned part of the (switchback) road is gravel but very well maintained, lots of normal vehicles do it. We had a 2WD SUV. Just drive slow and safe going down in the dark, or in the twilight like we did. Do this when staying on the Hilo side, because it will be a long ride back to Kona.

If you want an adventure go to the mauna kea summit. complete contrast to the landscape below. It is a rough road so I would advice you to book a charter to take you to the top.
