OK, you need to stay here to avoid crowds, noise, heat, and all the other BS that tourist towns are plagued by. It's cool at night, without the need for AC ( 1600 ' elev.)
It looks over the island, airport, and sea. A view without an elevator.
The hosts are real, down to earth. Not corporate.
You'll end up shopping for a lot next door.
Just try that in downtown Kona!!
This was our second stay at Bears Place and we will be sure to check that it is available before we book our next flight to the Big Island. We have stayed at many short term rentals over the past 8-10 years from Montana to Hawaii and Bears Place is one of the cleanest and best equipped one we've visited. There is a sweeping view of the ocean from the lanais of both upstairs units. We also stayed in a downstairs unit for several days and the lanai was very private and protected by foliage and fruit trees. Bears Place is located in a peaceful neighborhood several miles from the hustle and bustle of Ali'i Drive which we find to be an advantage. It is located 15 minutes from the airport. Nanette and Anne are more than willing to provide you with information on local sights to see on their beautiful island home.
It was so lovely staying in the Plumeria Suite at Bears' Place! This has been our best vacation ever, thanks to this fabulous setting and all the considerate EXTRAS that the hosts have provided, including information about Kona, restaurants, beaches, OOFOS and living here. We hope we will be back soon!

My husband and I stayed in the Plumeria Suite on the second floor - sitting out on the lanai felt like sitting in a tree house! We were surrounded by foliage and birdsong, refreshed by soft breezes - delightful! Our hostesses were wonderful, making sure we had everything we needed and more - we were even gifted with homemade lilikoi jam, delicious! The suite was spacious, very clean and very comfortable. We would definitely repeat our stay should we ever come to Kona again!

I had the upstairs studio which felt more like an apartment. The high ceilings and good quality furnishings made me feel I was in a hotel. On arrival I received 1/2 pawpaw and a beautiful small cake - thank you Nanette. The studio has everything a traveller needs - clean rooms, comfortable bed and wi-fi that always works. After a busy day's sight seeing it was a wonderful retreat to come home to as its in a very quiet suburb with lush gardens surrounding the property.
You do need a car to reach Bears Place and to visit the Big Island (unless you stay in the tourist part of Kona and use tours). There is a supermarket, Matsuyama, a few minutes drive away which I used frequently, which also sell petrol.
Highly recommended and would stay if in Kona again.

We stayed two weeks at this beautiful owner-operated guest house just a short 15 minute drive from the city center. Great location, nice ocean views, very clean, well maintained, nicely furnished, parking available, with all amenities available that you'll need during an extended stay and many beach items you can use. Owner was very personable and friendly, provided a walk through, answered our questions, provided us many locations to visit and other places of interest on the island and on an other occasion drove over to accommodate us on a personal request. If you are tired of resort living and staying in a hotel, this is a great option to consider!
We had the pleasure of staying in the Plumeria studio for 2 weeks. Our most important "make or break" in a vacation rental are cleanliness and comfy bed. This place had them both. We usually opt for a place with a king sized ned, but i would take this comfy queen over some of the inferior kings i have had. The large covered lanai was great. No problem with parking. The wifi was problem free. Easy access to utility room with washer and dryer for longer stays so you can pack fewer things! ($4.50 per load, soap included) i must admit, i haven't heard roosters on my previos stays in Kona, but they seem to be everywhere on the island now!
Nanette keeps the property in good repair and spotless inside and out. You will feel safe and looked after.
