“Nice little Japanese restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2012

Definitely not your typical Japanese steak house in the US. This is a nice small restaurant in the rear of the shopping complex with views of the bay. They have a nice menu of pupus and some larger dishes. The cooking area is open to the dining area so you can see the chefs preparing your food behind the counter facing you. The grilled chicken on a stick was good as was the grilled mushrooms, the sea salad, and the soup. Order several small dishes to share. Prices are reasonable too.

“KAISO Japanese YAKITORI Restaurant in Kona - a little of Japan in Kona.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 June 2011

If you've ever been to Japan or have always wanted to experience what it's like, this casual, little restaurant that is located on the ocean, is exactly such a place. They specialize in YAKITORI but also have other wonderful dishes to satisfy everyone’s palette.
Simply, YAKITORI is fresh grilled chicken on a stick that is flavored either teriyaki style or lightly salted and grilled to perfection over charcoal. There are different types of YAKITORI, dark or light meat, minced meat, the skin, etc. One chef (the owner), creates all the dishes so have patience as everything is made fresh on the spot. My suggestion is to order the mixed YAKITORI dish with 6 or so different types so you can sample the different styles. Order several other small dishes and eat “family style” to sample different dishes. Some suggestions are the egg roll, the steamed salmon with fresh mushrooms, and one of their stew pots – if you like spicy order that one! This is a very casual setting that will take you right back to Japan where they have little eateries like this all over the place. They are open daily for dinner except on Wednesdays. We like to call before we go just to make sure they are open. But they don't always answer the phone because they could be busy and they don't have any extra hands to answer the phone! Just go and try it - you'll like it.
