I lay here in bed listening to the bumping music from Rays on the Bay. Now I am 31 traveling with a 35 year old. We are both Starwood Gold (previously Platinum, ugh). We were "upgraded" to a room but unfortunately it's above the restaurant bar. Coming from the east coast with jet lag, we are in bed early but obviously not sleeping. We were hoping we could handle on ambien and Tylenol pm. We should have asked to move. The lobby bar has a good happy hour and Stephon was great and treated us so well. The pools are great. The pool bar was a different story, Rick, pool bartender, treated us like we were idiots. We arrived just before 5 and you could tell them were not interested. The menu says "chips and guacamole". I asked for "guacamole appetizer" and Rick looked at me like I was crazy and said, "what, you just want a side of guacamole?" I had to point to the menu item, their own menu. They then bring us the smallest side of guacamole for $8, a tablespoon of guacamole. He was then done with us.

If you have to stay here, here are some recommendations:
1. Stop by the ABC store on your way for some alcohol. The pool bar by the pool closes at 5 although the pool is open until 10. We found out quickly that you need to bring your own alcohol after 5. We saw lots of people mixing their own drinks because the only place to get a drink is Rays, quite a walk and a more formal restaurant.
2. If you don't want to sit down at Rays, order in. We also saw lots of people with styrofoam containers of food from the outside by the pool. No where for food after 5. Really sad that they choose to lose this revenue.
3. If you go to bed early, stay away from a room near Rays and put a towel under your door, lots of slamming doors by housekeeping at 7 am. Bring Tylenol pm.
4. Just pick another hotel.

Overall a good hotel provided you have transport as it is a long way from Kona. Shuttle takes 45 mins each way and runs only every 2.5 hours. If you are stuck at the hotel during the day, the only food available is by the pool and is the usual high fat chips, fries etc. For a hotel at this level, I was surprised. Otherwise room was very good, view from balcony was fantastic with both ocean and mountain views. Breakfast was good although could have a few more choices of cereals and hot food, but this is a minor issue. Rays by the Bay restaurant was awesome...if you staying here you must watch the sunset whilst having dinner.

My girlfriend and I visited Kona for a couple of days this month and decided to book at the Sheraton. From the moment we arrived we felt like we won the lottery with choosing a hotel. The staff was impeccable the service was amazing and it just seemed like everyone went the extra mile. Seriously.

For us, it's a no brainer, great prices, great service!!

Thanks so much guys for making our trip so enjoyable! we'll be back!

Jen and Paulina!

We stayed here for a long weekend, after my partner had business on the island. Overall, it's very nice and the location is stunning. However, there are just enough misses that we really had to question the "resort" category - especially as a Starwood property. Full disclosure is we have provided this feedback to the hotel and they have done a fantastic job responding to our feedback. We would definitely still stay there again - but with more realistic expectations.

The public areas are very pretty and recently renovated. The Rays on the Bay restaurant is excellent - we at there several times and the food and service are top notch!

However, there were some gaps in some of the basics that you would expect at a higher level Starwood resort. Rooms are fine, with the exception of the industrial-strengh commode and plastic cups in the bathrooms. Seemed very Holiday Inn circa 1975. We had some confusion at check-in, where we upgraded to ocean front and somehow ended up with a very nice view of the Bay and the mountains? They did recover well and resolve the issue, and we got a great room above the restaurant with a phenominal view of the manta rays at night.

Room service was a bit strange in that they do not leave the cart for you to eat off of, but rather bring you a tray where you can either eat off the bed or the lanai (with pretty dirty tables..?) Again, not a big deal but for a full dinner with room service it was a bit awkward. We also had some gaps in the housekeeping due to some confusion around the new "green" program. **Note to reader: if you sign up for the program, you won't get any housekeeping at all. We didn't realize this as I had done this at other hotels and still got basic clean-up and bed made, just not new sheets. So that is good information to have.

Finally, the pool area is very nice. Note to those who are looking for a quiet restful pool area. Locals are offered discounted rooms on the weekends - which is awesome - and the pool very quickly becomes a loud, public pool. We did mind as it gave a great enery and local vibe to the place and cleared out by dinnertime.

The bottom line is it's a nice property. A bit short staffed and therefore missing the "do it all" 4-or 5-star service resort service. But we would stay there again - it's gorgeous and away from it all.

We stayed for only a couple of days, but I would've liked to stay longer. We had an ocean front room which was worth the extra money. We could see the manta rays from our balcony and one morning I saw a pod of dolphins who swam very close to the shore. The pool and grounds were very nice and weren't very crowded. There is a historical area to the right as you look toward the hotel from the parking lot. Very interesting and there are some tide pools with tiny critters to see also.
Word of warning; 4 teenage boys tried to jump off the rocks and go swim with the rays. The current near the rocks was too strong and they couldn't get close to shore. They had to be rescued by one of the boats that came for manta ray watching. There is a swimmable beach at mile marker 5, not at hotel, which is at mile marker 6.5...
The shopping area very close to the hotel was very useful, post office with lots of boxes for shipping, gas station, grocery, pharmacy, etc. The pharmacy more like Target... Beach towels, water shoes, even an entire Hello Kitty isle!?
The hotel isn't within walking distance to downtown, but it was an easy drive and we didn't have any trouble parking.
