“Interesting and Inspiring”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2012

What a beautiful tribute to a local boy who dreamt big and made his dreams come true. A great alternative to waiting at the gate and the kids (pre-teen and teen) loved it. Just make sure you leave enough time to get through the long, slow security line.

“Space flight enthusiasts ,do not miss this wonderful museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 February 2012

The Onizuka Space Center is one of the best museums I have been in considering it's size! It is located at the Kona International Airport between United and Hawaiian Air,and is very easy to miss if you have evening flights. The hours are 8:30a.m.-4:30pm and cost is $3.00. The museum is dedicated to Col.Ellison Onizuka, who perished on his second mission aboard the Challenger,January 28th,1986. His life is chronicled from beginning to tragic end,but the museum is a wonderful testimony to what an average person can accomplish,if you dare to dream, and make good use of the opportunities and education available.
There is so much detailed information, flight suits, moon rock, short films, and lots of hands on for children and adults, that we easily spent 2 hours there. The staff is very friendly and has a wealth of knowledge. There is a small gift shop, and if you are a collector of pins and patches,as we are, you won't be disappointed. Ellison loved to work and talk with school children, and there is a great area just for children with many opportunities for hands on interaction. Whether you are a couple, a family with children,or just a single traveler interested in our country's space program, you will greatly benefit from this visit.

“Stop by if you have some time to kill...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 December 2007

I was actually at the Onizuka Space Center (coincidentally) the day that the shuttle Columbia broke up in the atmosphere in February of 2003.

This is a good place to kill some time at the Kona airport, but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way just to visit. If you have any interest in the US space program, it might not hurt to give yourself an extra hour at the airport before you depart the Big Island to see some of the exhibits.

Aloha!
