The men in the family (Dad, 17 and 14 yr old) decided to surf in the morning without lessons. Dad had surfed a couple times years ago - obviously couldn't teach the boys anything and they caught a couple waves each at the beginner surfing beach where the K Surf School teaches (I am unable to type in the name of the bay or the name of the school - it doesn't recognize the spelling - but it is the Bay beside the Little Blue Church). (they rented the boards through them). They 'surfed' for 2 hours and were so exhausted that when the girls were going for lessons, they were unable to join them. The girls had a 2 hr lesson and the first 20 min or so was a 'dry land' teaching session behind the shop. Everyone had a chance to try a couple times, getting up on the board and were given pointers. Then they were given rash guards, water shoes and they all went across the road to the bay. Boards were there and everyone went out into the water and had to paddle to a buoy (the waiting place) near the area that the easy waves were. There was a couple of instructors out in the bay and another by shore. The guy by shore made sure our girls (8 and 12) knew what they were doing and where to go. Once at the buoy, they were called individually and they paddled to the instructor who waited for a good wave and gave them a push....they almost always went for a good ride, but depending on how they were standing etc, depended on how long they were on the board for! They each got about 8-10 rides in, and the little one got tired and an instructor towed her into shore a bit early. They both really enjoyed the experience and it was perfect for beginners. They all were provided with a cool drink at the shop when done. There was a private professional photographer there taking pics of the people involved in the surf lessons, and when you register you check off if you want him to email you pictures. We did get the pics and they were good, but a little pricey and I was happy with the ones I had taken. The best part was the convenient location at K Bay (you can snorkel there too) and the instructors catered nicely to our girls. It appeared that the instructors took the adults and those who were comfortable with trying bigger waves, out a bit further. Their brochure says "Learn with the best local surfers/ instructors. Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Trained. All gear included". They rent surfboards, kayaks, boogie boards, stand up boards and snorkel gear. The surf school is along the highway across from the church. There is a parking lot at the south end of the bay, near the snorkeling area, but we found parking to be a bit of a problem and had to go away to a side street. Would definitely recommend the surf school.
