“Peaceful, beautiful beach”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

This National Historical Park north of Kailua is a great place to watch sea turtles, walk the beach, or look for birds in the old Hawaiian fishponds. Be careful walking the trails during the hot part of the day, though. And wear shoes, not sandals. The lava fields are uneven.

“Closest NP to an airport!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 November 2013

This is a fairly stark place with much lava flow remains and very little vegetation. There is a walk that you can take (about 1/2 mile) that leads to the ancient Hawaiian fish ponds and an excellent place to whale watch from about Dec to April. We were too early for the whales thus just a quick drop-by to get a NP stamp in the passport (# 243 of units visited) and clean bathroom/water stop. The airport mentioned is KOA less than a mile away.

“Experience ancient Hawaiian culture - for free”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

Great way to see and learn about ancient Hawaiian culture. Excellent exhibits and self guided tour. Also located next to a very nice snorkel area. Admission to the park is free. Recommend a morning visit as it does get quite warm and there is minimal shade. Also, bring water and snacks as closest snack place is at least 15 minute drive away. Recommend combining this with a visit to Captain Cook Monument area and then continue south to Southern Most Point of the US.

“A tranquil place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2013

We went to the park in mid morning and marveled at the pools of water in the lava rocks. We enjoyed the beach but got hot walking without shade. The park is impeccably kept, we just picked the wrong time to explore it.
