“Disappointed”
Reviewed 5 March 2014

We've always enjoyed small artsy commuity whenever visiting the Big Island. This time many shops and restaurants were closed, or appeared run-down. It was not worth our time to drive there from Kona and will not go back

“About the Ukelele Gallery”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

In this sleepy little town, there's a very fine ukelele gallery with gorgeous handmade ukes made by local crafts people and the owner, Sam Rosen. My 12 year old daughter plays the uke and Sam let her play any instrument in the shop that she wanted. He was generous with his time and treated us like old friends. It was a pleasure to visit his shop. Then he took us downstairs to the workshop and we spend some time down there with Sam and another person who was taking his uke workshop--a 10 day experience in which you make your own uke. The craftsmanship with which the instruments are made is incredible. My husband and I shopped around the art galleries in town, while our daughter spent another hour hanging out with Sam in the store and the workshop. He put her to work tuning a new instrument he just finished. If you are into guitars or ukes, and also want to see some local galleries outside of the tourist areas, this is worth a trip to Holualoa.

“Visit the Holualoa Ukulele Gallery”
Reviewed 20 December 2013

On the south end of this cute village stands the old post office, holding the Holualoa Ukulele Gallery. Inside are ukuleles built by island instrument makers. The owner Sam knows all about ukuleles and will let you play them all, if you like. He also offers classes on how to make them yourself. (I think it was 10 weeks). He has all sizes of ukuleles, and they do cost quite a bit more than the toy things you see at markets. But they're so great and they sound so beautiful. Plus, you can support a local artist--and what's better than that?

“Kona coffee fest”
Reviewed 7 December 2013

Had a great time wandering through town sampling 30+ coffees during the coffee fest. Fell in love with one and had to bring some home with me. Very pricey, but it's just for those lazy weekend mornings. The "town" is a smattering of galleries and a couple of B&B's. We parked at the school lot and had to walk a bit, but that's not a complaint. Didn't have time to do much gallery hopping, but really enjoyed the views and the people from the different plantations. Highly recommended if there in early November.

“Check Gallery Hours Before You Go”
Reviewed 16 November 2013

Holualoa is a cute area in the Kona hills with what may be nice galleries. We say may because we found many, if not most, of the establishments closed--despite signs saying the galleries should have been open. The galleries we visited had lots of fine items (fairly highly priced), but it was disappointing to make the trip and find so many places closed.
