I went to this course solo and played and early morning round. There was one foursome ahead of me and the let me through. The course was full of peacocks and other beautiful birds. Now the course was very challenging and hilly. It was in great shape and the weather was perfect. The staff took great care of me and the gal at the pro shop offered a discount. Also the cart attendant makes a great bloody mary.

This is one of the most beautiful courses I've ever seen that doesn't empty your wallet to golf on and the amazing exotic birds all over are so fun to see. We've gotten some pictures even placed in the local newspaper. My husband golfs at Makalei 2-3 times a week!

This golf course is deceiving. The first thing that is deceiving is that it appears very unfriendly. We tried to play this course earlier in the week and were rained out. They advised us that we could have a rain check to use later in the week. However, when we arrived today to use the rain check, confusion seemed to reign. Apparently our receipt was not marked correctly. But that managed to get ironed out and they even gave us free range balls.

The next deceiving thing is that you think this is a golf course, but it really is more of a zoo, or maybe an aviary. There are Peacocks on every hole. Seriously, they guard almost every tee box waiting for you to arrive. They also seem to recognize the sound of chip bags being opened and run up to you wanting to be fed. What a life, living on a golf course in Hawaii and eating for free!

The next deceiving thing is that this course appears to be in a jungle on the mountain. And it is somewhat true, it is in a jungle, and it is on a mountain….but every single hole has a view, is beautiful to play and look at, so you don’t really feel that you are in a jungle.

The final two things are not deceiving:

1. The course is a local’s course and appears to be used extensively by them. Good for them, they need to keep it alive!

2. The course is not a typical Hawaiian resort golf course. Expect challenging golf, with lots of elevation changes, very few level lies and greens that always roll towards the ocean!

Come for the golf, return for the Peacocks! This is truly a hidden gem!

If you enjoy challenging golf in a spectacular setting with unbelievable views and peacocks, this course is worth the drive. It is probably the best golf value on the Big Island, as well. Lots of tee times available and the very reasonable green fees include cart (a must have).

We enjoyed a round of golf at Makalei during a stay on the Big Island. It is up the "mountain" from Kona airport. Scenic area populated with numerous flocks of pheasants, yellow canaries, and others I could not identify. Great views from some tees, though most holes take you away from the ocean side and into the forests. Greens fees more reasonable than a lot of other choices ($83) though $50 each additional to rent clubs, which I thought was pricey. However, the gas cart is included in your greens fees--probably because no one is allowed to walk. Fun afternoon.
