My husband and I recently visited the Big Island and decided to stay in Kona again. There were a few beaches that we didn't have a chance to visit on our first trip and Kua Bay happened to be on that list. All I can say is wow!!! The sand feels like powdered sugar on your feet, the water is extremely clear, and it wasn't overly crowded with visitors. There's restrooms nearby, showers to rinse off, and picnic tables as well. We will definitely return!

As tempting as it is to do as the locals do, don't venture out too far unless you know what you are doing. The surf was rough on my day at Kua beach and the waves were pounding. The locals out riding the big waves are serious about this sport (the waves were big enough to ride with a surf board) I had a great time riding the smaller waves and the sand was beautiful, not rocky although there are some rocks on shore you want to be aware of when out in the water. The beach is popular with locals and they keep it clean too. Beautiful beach but there is no tree cover here, so bring an umbrella or lots of sunscreen and enjoy!

Right after mile marker 89 coming from Kona. Easy access, very limited parking, lots of ppl park on the side of the road.

Big strong waves that can knock you down. Great for body boarding, the ocean was filled w/ them. Beach is really picturesque with white sand beach dotted w/ some lava rocks. Sun set is awesome. Have no clue where you can possibly snorkel, maybe different season, different time of day the water would be a lot calmer?

This was a great beach with a lot of fun to hang out at. We went for sunset and had a ball. The water was nice but had some big waves. Go for anytime of day. No real shade and decent facilities.

Kua Bay was always one of our favourite beaches when we lived in Kona. It's easy to get to and it's actually got a good amount of sand, unlike many other Big Island beaches. Getting there at 9 when the gates open ensures a prime spot as it does get really busy. There are not really any shady spots so be prepared. In the summer the water is calm and crystal blue. Going in the winter can be a completely different experience. The winter tides wash away half the sand and surf can reach all the way up the beach. If you're not use to swimming in the ocean, stay away from Kua in the winter. There are other beaches which are much more protected with calmer waters. Just head a little more South to the state park beach and that one will be perfect for you.
