Our main purpose of choosing Kona was to do some diving and knock around the Big Island of Hawaii for a couple of weeks. Big Island Divers was one of two dive shops recommended and so we tried them both. The shop, where you need to sign releases, pay etc is in a storefront, easy to drive to and the boat is in the marina you will pass on the way in from the airport, as is the case with most dive operators. The marina is about a 10 or 15 min drive from town but has gas, snack shop, bathrooms which make this a good staging area. We brought all our own gear and handed it over to the crew to set up (they asked us first if this is what we wanted) which is fine because they double check our gear before we hit the water. They have towels which we REALLY appreciated but they ask you to leave your shoes at the dock and they will store them. Boat is good and was never crowded, good drinks and snacks provided, little sandwich wraps and pretzels I think. The crew is completely competent and an awful lot of fun. We dove the most with Flipper, Sarah and I think Christine (??) I cannot believe I forgot her name because our very first dive she found and danced with a pod of dolphins, how fun is that!! Flipper handled us the next evening for the Manta dive. Unfortunately we had very tricky weather conditions in the form of a horrible surge that kept trying to turn us in to a mess of tumbleweeds every time we tried to sit on the ocean floor around the "campfire". We did see the Mantas (amazing creatures) but when Flipper became concerned with the weather he carefully guided the ladies up by hand, one at a time, which earned him the gratitude and respect of our men. But once we were all safely back on board, the crew continued with the second best part of their job: friendly, fun, entertainment. They will rinse and store your gear for you, bring it back to the boat or you can pick it up anytime at the shop. if you are heading out for a shore dive you might ask for a recommendation on guided shores dives. In summary, I think Big Island Divers excels in providing good solid diving in a boisterous atmosphere. I like them, recommend them and would be happy to dive with them again. Mahalo guys!

Two points I would like to make. If you have an interest in scuba or snorkelling you must do this. It is a unique and privileged experience. On 5/5 I spent 45 mins sat in a large circle at just 6m, while 23 mantas got up close and personal with us. Truly amazing. It is rated one of the top 10 dives in the world, rightly so, but also probably the easiest night dive you can do.

I chose to go with Big Island Divers due to reviews here and was not disappointed. The team were friendly, well organised, knowledgeable and highly professional. They are also obviously very passionate about the mantas. They endorse the Green List of ethical operators protecting these fabulous creatures in Hawaii which is a very worthy program. If you chose another operator for some reason make sure they are on this.

I cannot recommend the experience or Big Island Divers highly enough.

We went out last night for the 2 dive trip. It was one of the greatest adventures I have ever experienced in my life. Our guide Emily was awesome pointing out many different sea creatures, giving us a presentation before our manta ray dive and always checking to make sure we are happy and comfortable. Once the show of manta rays come to life it was breath taking. They are within inches of you gliding peacefully beanth. At first it is a little frightening, but this gives way to excitement and thrill of being with such beautiful creatures.
My husband did the scuba dive with Jess and she was just as professional. To our captain Johnathan, Jess and Emily our sincere thanks. The snorks!

The manta ray snorkeling excursion was one of the highlights of our vacation. Cap'n Scott and Dive Master Adam were fantastic -- great at the technicalities of their jobs, great hosts, really informative about the rays and coast and water and they just made it a fun trip for everyone. Highly recommend.
