Description: Opened in 1998 in the waterfront location adjacent to Huggo's fine dining restaurant, On the Rocks is a come as you are, kau kau (eat) great food with sand between your toes, kick back and enjoy great island entertainment center of fun on Hawaii Island. "After operating Huggo's restaurant for 18 years, we had the opportunity to purchase the vacant lot right next door and we jumped at it," Eric says. "The concept is what you see today - a casual bar and restaurant set literally on the rocks and sand of Kailua-Bay. Like many locals, we were tired of driving 20 miles or more up the coast to enjoy this sort of relaxed resort ambiance and decided to create just that right here in town."

Went for dessert and ordered the mud pie which was hugh. Two of us had a hard time finishing it off. It was tasty but expensive when 1/2 the amount at 1/2 the price would have been better. Service was very slow.

I'd probably give this 3.5 stars....3 for the food, 4 for the view. Mai Tais were good and the tables up front in the sand were a nice touch. Service was adequate, nothing more.

Fish tacos were a disappointment. While visiting Hawaii, I wouldn't necessarily expect great Italian food, classic French cuisine, or amazing Memphis BBQ...but I would expect all restaurants to get fish right. Girlfriend's burger and fries were decent...so on an extremely small sample size, food is hit or miss. Would recommend stopping in at happy hour for drinks and the sunset.

If you are going to go to Kona, go to Huggo's. Superb view, excellent service while we were there, and great Mai-Tai's. The night we were there they had an incredible local guitarist, Belo. Amazing. Sounds a little hokey but he played the guitar and uke at the same time. About every fourth song, he was accompanied by a beautiful hula dancer. They were outstanding. This is an outdoor bar, so you can put your feet in the sand while watching the sun go down on the Pacific. We had some light food which was okay but not great. With that in mind, go for the drinks, entertainment, and sunset. Within walking distance of most of the places people stay in Kona. I also had coffee there in the morning. The Kona variety, and it was actually one of the better cups of coffee I had during my stay. Parking is difficult, so if you walk from your place, I would suggest doing that. After a few Mai-Tai's, you may be glad you left the car at home!

We are out bar hopping and after 3 tries, finally found a good bar with some good food. The drinks were nicely done, the mai tai was great, perfect float. The Mojito was not overly sweet, highlighting the mint and rum. We had the pork nachos, which were a little cheesy but the pork was well done. The whole vibe of the place just works and the staff really makes an effort. Definitely made the night a great time. Head to huggo's first, not last.

We were a little disappointed after reading reviews on how great the food was. We went for happy hour and it took quite some time to get our food. Then when it arrived it was over cooked. The view is fantastic and drinks were good. We will pass next time.
