Stayed with a group for a friend's wedding. This place is huge & absolutely amazing for individuals or groups. I felt like I had enough privacy when I wanted it, and the layout is great for groups too. Can't say enough about this place with only 200 characters. 5 stars.

Our family stayed in the Anniversary & Ocean Suites the week of March 22, 2014. Spectacular location for family. Our daughter loved swimming in the pool daily and training us to be mermaids & mermen! White Sands Beach is a blast for boogie boarding & simply hanging out. The deck of the Anniversary Suite overlooks the ocean and our breakfasts & sunsets were filled with whale & spinner dolphin viewing. Don't forget your binoculars, well worth having. The decor and art of the owner was great and the base amenities were top notch. Our group of 7 saved significantly by shopping at Keauhou and grilling pool side at the Shack. Kahaluu beach was a simple :15 minute walk and had fantastic snorkeling & surfing off the beach. Spectacular location for larger groups to use. Weather was so good, several nights were slept on the deck & couches with the patio door open to listen to the waves.....Missing the Shack already.......

Room Tip: Anniversary suite has a spectacular deck view for the Ocean.

Although all of the reviews of the Sugar Shack seemed positive, I didn't really know what to expect when I got there. I had rented the entire property for a week and invited my family from Israel, San Francisco, and Southern California to join me there to celebrate my birthday. We stayed from March 8-15, 2014

Everyone in our party of 9 commented on how perfect the Sugar Shack was for our stay.

We occupied all of the suites--Anniversary, Honeymoon, Ocean, and Mango suites. There was more than enough room for everyone.

We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the birds bathing and drinking from the fountain which fed into the small pool at the front of the property. We al loved waking up to the sound of the many birds frequenting the nearby trees and bushes.

We enjoyed watching the sunset from the deck as well.

The Sugar Shack is south of the main town of Kona, but on the major street which goes through the town, Ali'i Drive--so it's quite easy to get to town, as well as to the highways to both the north and south.

I'm not sure what the stay would have felt like had we shared the property with three other parties. We would have lost a sense of privacy, for sure. That might be a consideration for others wishing to rent just one of the suites in future.

Our experience, overall, was absolutely wonderful.

Room Tip: The Anniversary Suite has the biggest living space, and also access to the front deck. It would be...

We spent a relaxing week at the beautiful Kona Sugar Shack. Our host had rented the whole house for a family reunion and it proved to be perfect for our group of 9 adults (3 couples and 3 singles). The location was excellent with easy access to town and the nearby Keauhou shopping center. We did most of our grocery shopping there and also enjoyed a few excellent meals at Sam Choy's.

My husband and I stayed in the poolside Honeymoon Suite which was spacious and comfortable, with both fans and A/C. We also enjoyed family togetherness in the rest of the house which was beautifully decorated with interesting art and artifacts. As a group, we particularly enjoyed the Anniversary Suite with its spacious kitchen, living room and lanai overlooking the ocean. The kitchens were fully equipped and the garden with the pool was a lovely place to relax. For a lovely home away from home, the Kona Sugar Shack proved to be the perfect place for our family reunion on beautiful Hawaii!

We stayed at the Kona Sugar Shack in Feb/March 2014. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and heartily second what was said in the previous good reviews. Rather that repeat what was said there we’ll add some additional impressions. We stayed in the Anniversary Suite, and Suite specific comments mainly apply to that unit.

The Anniversary Suite is very well equipped - plenty of pots & pans, dinnerware, utensils. Lots of nice touches: 4 slice toaster, blender, food processor, orange juicer, rice cooker, electric carving knife, multiple coffee makers, air popper, filtered water dispenser inside fridge (just inside left door), large cooler (in bedroom closet).

There is a great view of the ocean from the pool area and from all units except Mango Suite, which has a patio in back. Note that on second floor you are looking at the ocean thru some power lines and trees (see photos). Birds roost on them – you can get a good look at them when they do.

Ali'i drive is between you and the ocean, so there is road noise, as noted on one of the few very negative reviews on the Sugar Shack. Most others didn't mention it, so I'll give it some space here. As Andrew Doughty says:
“Traffic noise is going to be your penalty for staying on Alii Drive, but it’s a penalty most are quite willing to endure.”
Doughty, Andrew (2013-12-15). Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook
(Kindle Locations 1581-1582). Wizard Publications, Inc.. Kindle Edition.
Traffic gets especially busy during the morning and evening rushes and progressively dies down to almost nothing during the night. During the day it's steady at about 20 cars a minute, with an occasional truck, motorcycle or bus, all doing about 30 MPH. An occasional overgrown child on a motorcycle was the only thing we found really obnoxious. Depending on your sensitivity this is a big deal or not. The unit is above the road, so the traffic isn't in your face. We found it quite tolerable and enjoyed the lanai, watching the waves, whales, and dolphins, or just snoozing. The bedroom is in the back and the road noise is much less there. Nothing to disturb our sleep. The neighborhood in back is quiet, except for the birds going off at sunrise (no roosters), some laughing women next door and a neighbor running a chainsaw one day. We did wake up with the birds.

Some suggestions:
Bring binoculars and watch for whales and dolphins.
We normally parked in the back, but loading and unloading is much easier from the carport, which is accessed from Ali'i Drive. I wouldn't want to back out during the busy daylight hours, but we found we could turn a Nissan Altima around in the carport.
The water heater is solar, so a shower on a cloudy morning can be a rather brisk experience, at least it was one day.
The KTA to the south is the closest grocery store. They charge for bags, ($.05 each) - encourages reuse.
If you'll be arriving after dark have a flashlight handy, as the way in from the back is very dark.

Room Tip: Mango Suite is in the back. Quiet, but no view. Anniversary Suite is really nice. We didn't s...

We rented two different suites during our two week stay at the Sugar Shack. We stayed in the honeymoon poolside suite the first week. It has an outdoor kitchen beside the pool which we enjoyed each and every morning and night. The second week we moved upstairs to the Ocean view 3 bedroom suite. It was very roomy and had a nice view of the ocean across the street. The whole two week experience at the sugar shack was fantastic. We enjoyed the pool when we returned from a day at the beach and the BBQ at night. Having fresh bananas and limes from the trees on the property was a very special treat. Thank you for providing us a perfect home away from home.

My husband and I absolutely loved the Kona Sugar Shack! In a perfect location, so close to great restaurants and right across from a public beach. We stayed in the Anniversary Suite which was so beautiful--large outdoor patio with a great view, full kitchen, and beautiful bedroom, bathroom, and living room. Would recommend to everyone--couples, families, groups of friends.

Room Tip: We loved the anniversary suite--great view!
