We were a group of five couples making a biannual trip to Kona with a larger group. Having previously stayed in several Kona vacation rentals, the Kona Sugar Shack is good selection for our needs and expectations. Jae McCaskill is a thoughtful and caring owner. She is a good communicator; our arrangements were always precise and accurate, with follow-up emails a standard of hers. She and John were absent during our stay, but Uncle Mike ably filled the role of caretaker and advisor. I was impressed with directions, postings, signing, etc. that took the guesswork out of learning the ropes of a new place. Our group had all three suites for nine days. The one issue that could have made it better was if all of the bedrooms in the Ocean Suite had their own bath. I would say that at 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, the Ocean Suite is great for a family, but it was a bit tight having two of the couples share one bath. We knew that going in, but the reality was more challenging than we had anticipated, especially as the other three couples were en-suite (communal living does require some sacrifice).
The location was ideal for us. The unobstructed view of the ocean is quite special. John has done a wonderful job with the landscaping. It is lush and well kept. Flowers abound. Uncle Mike gave us a huge bunch of fresh bananas from the tree by the pool...delicious. The pool area became our gathering spot for lazy afternoons with books, good talk and Iz and Na Leo playing in the background (we brought our own iPod player).
Since our group was a part of a much larger group, all staying nearby, we found the Sugar Shack to be a good central location. Its street-to-street design allows ample parking in the rear. Alii Drive access is good, but it is busy and requires some care. Also, it can be noisy, but we knew that, too. On two nights, we hosted dinners for 25+ people out by the pool. The kitchen in the Ocean Suite was more than adequate for this preparation. The outdoor kitchen area of the Honeymoon Suite served us well as a beverage center. Uncle Mike helped us gather some banana leaves, bougainvillea and other flowers to use as centerpieces. When combined with our music, the tiki torches, the gentle waterfall by the pool and the sound of the surf across the street, the effect was equal to what you might find at one of the resorts.
