“A great place to stay near Kona”
Reviewed 11 August 2009

My wife and I just returned from a week stay at the Kona Sugar Shack for part of our honeymoon. If you are thinking about staying at the Kona Sugar Shack, I would recommend that you do so. The owners set the vibe with their cheerful greeting when you arrive. They are kind, respectful and very helpful. Their recommendations for hidden beaches and yummy restaurants allowed us to maximize our time on the Island. They also provide guests with all of the basic gear (beach chairs, coolers, umbrellas, boogie boards, snorkels, etc...) needed for most adventures to local destinations.

The location right across from the beach is great. We barely encountered the other guests but when we did they were warm and gracious. It is a cozy, comfortable and relaxing home away from home that provides the perfect base from which to explore the Island.

Make sure to try the fresh apple bananas!

I have never written a review even for the dump where we stayed in Paris. But this was a wonderful experience for the entire family even the teens (boy 14, girl 16). Property is located just a couple of miles from Kona. Great location. Beautiful sunsets. Owners were friendly and helpful. Accommodations were very nice and comfy and very clean. Does not have the generic hotel feel. Pool area was great; fun and relaxing. Great view of the ocean while lounging by the pool. Across the street was a great beach for riding the waves. And just a short distance down the street is a great snorkel beach. We would definitely go back to the Kona Sugar Shack.

My family from Sydney Australia booked the Kona Sugar Shack as we prefer to stay in guesthouses and accomodation with a more personal feel. We certainly got this with the Kona Sugar Shack! Jae and John were excellent hosts and gave us some excellent advice on places to visit in Kona and further afield. We upgraded to the Ocean Suite which was perfect for a family and the view from the balcony was lovely. The suite was spotlessly clean and had everything we neede for our stay. The kids enjoyed the pool and we borrowed boogie boards, snorkels, beach chairs and coolers for our days on the beach. We would highly recommend the Kona Sugar Shack for a great place to stay on the Big Island.

We were a group of five couples making a biannual trip to Kona with a larger group. Having previously stayed in several Kona vacation rentals, the Kona Sugar Shack is good selection for our needs and expectations. Jae McCaskill is a thoughtful and caring owner. She is a good communicator; our arrangements were always precise and accurate, with follow-up emails a standard of hers. She and John were absent during our stay, but Uncle Mike ably filled the role of caretaker and advisor. I was impressed with directions, postings, signing, etc. that took the guesswork out of learning the ropes of a new place. Our group had all three suites for nine days. The one issue that could have made it better was if all of the bedrooms in the Ocean Suite had their own bath. I would say that at 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, the Ocean Suite is great for a family, but it was a bit tight having two of the couples share one bath. We knew that going in, but the reality was more challenging than we had anticipated, especially as the other three couples were en-suite (communal living does require some sacrifice).

The location was ideal for us. The unobstructed view of the ocean is quite special. John has done a wonderful job with the landscaping. It is lush and well kept. Flowers abound. Uncle Mike gave us a huge bunch of fresh bananas from the tree by the pool...delicious. The pool area became our gathering spot for lazy afternoons with books, good talk and Iz and Na Leo playing in the background (we brought our own iPod player).

Since our group was a part of a much larger group, all staying nearby, we found the Sugar Shack to be a good central location. Its street-to-street design allows ample parking in the rear. Alii Drive access is good, but it is busy and requires some care. Also, it can be noisy, but we knew that, too. On two nights, we hosted dinners for 25+ people out by the pool. The kitchen in the Ocean Suite was more than adequate for this preparation. The outdoor kitchen area of the Honeymoon Suite served us well as a beverage center. Uncle Mike helped us gather some banana leaves, bougainvillea and other flowers to use as centerpieces. When combined with our music, the tiki torches, the gentle waterfall by the pool and the sound of the surf across the street, the effect was equal to what you might find at one of the resorts.

The Kona Sugar Shack is perfectly located for touring all over the island...it is the place to come home to at the end of the day and feel totally at home with all the amenities. Wonderful views, pool, comfortable surroundings and the little details you would put into your own vacation home. Would highly recommend.

The best and only way to stay on the Big Island! The Kona Sugar Shack has a great location on Ali'i Drive--its removed enough from touristy Kona, yet still has access to all the great amenities such as grocery stores and beaches. It is a great 'base' from which to venture out all over the Island, we never bothered staying anywhere else. Our hosts Jae and John were extremely attentive and friendly, and very helpful with tips about sightseeing. It is situated right between a great snorkeling bay 5 minutes to the left (Kahalu), and a great boogie boarding beach (White Sands) to the right. There are grills outside which you can bbq on--its nice to do after a day-long of exploring, swimming and hiking. They just added solar and are trying to 'go green' etc. Beautiful gardens tended with lots of care. What a fantastic place!!!
