Silver Oaks Ranch
Reviewed 9 March 2014

We saw the Big Island 15 years ago as part of a cruise. We enjoyed it very much and decided to go back for our 25th wedding anniversary. We wanted to spend the week exploring the island, so the usual resort stay wasn't of interest. We saw the Silver Oaks Ranch reviews and instantly knew that's where we wanted to stay.

Rick and Amy are wonderful hosts who made our stay exceptionally pleasant. We rented the Ranch House Cottage and it was perfect for the two of us, with plenty of room and everything we needed for cooking a few meals. The ranch is 1500 ft. in elevation above Kailua and the view over the town is beautiful. It's an easy 5-10 minute drive to the downtown area with the usual assortment of dining and shopping options.

What we really enjoyed was how quiet it was. It was almost as though we were the only people around. It was a wonderfully relaxing stay and highly recommended.

This is a delightfully different place to stay. With only a few accommodations, this is a homey, warm, fun place where owners Rick and Amy make you feel very welcome. The cottages are well appointed with everything you will need, including coffee and chocolates with macadamia nuts! There are goats and horses in fields nearby and we even got to see three baby goats born the night before we left. Best of all, Silver Oaks is up on a mountain, out of the crowded tourist area but still only ten minutes from the center of Kona. Four of us stayed in two different cottages and highly recommend Silver Oaks!

When I started researching on a place to stay for our 25th wedding anniversary I had a few things in mind. 1) The Big Island of Hawaii, 2) A place to stay away from the hustle and bustle tourist trap area. 3) wanted to stay and do something different from our other vacations. Well we found the perfect place In http://www.silveroaksranch.com/ our hosts Amy and Rick took extremely great care with us. They were able to direct us and inform us with all the questions we had, they were like our personal concierges. I can not give praises enough on the time we spent there and the peaceful tranquility we experienced. People look no further this is where you want to stay. We stayed in the Ranch House Cottage a Large (800 sq ft) one bedroom, dramatic views of Kona, Kailua Bay, coastline, property Large bedroom with king-size bed, high vaulted ceilings, walk-in closet, Living/dining room, full kitchen with dishwasher, TV, VCR, Stereo Private bath with shower, washer/dryer, Deck with spa and porch swing Wireless desktop with internet.
The animals on the ranch were a treat and friendly Nigerian Dwarf goats, sheep, Hens of all types and last but not least Turkeys. Everything in terms of stuff to do dinner, shows helicopter rides, supermarket are just 15-30 minutes away.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the ranch. Thank you, Rick and Amy. Everything we needed was readily available. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The bedroom was large and airy, perfect for getting the rest we needed. The view is lovely. The location is quiet, yet near enough to all Kailua sights. We felt at home immediately! We were glad to have a kitchen, which included everything needed to cook for ourselves. We will return, I have no doubt.

We traveled to the Big Island of Hawaii to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and found the perfect place to stay at the Silver Oaks Ranch. The owners, Rick and Amy, are the nicest people you will ever meet. They are kind and generous folks who treated us just like family while sharing their beautiful property with us. We rented the Ranch Guest House and it was perfect in every way - very clean, spacious, well-equipped, and comfortable. All of the amenities you could wish for were there - snorkeling gear, beach chairs and towels, back packs, reef shoes, coolers, etc. There were some nice extra touches as well, too numerous to mention, except to say that Rick and Amy are very thoughtful hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Silver Oaks Ranch. Most of all, we appreciated it's peaceful and quiet location, just a short drive from Kona. It was a fun and relaxing place and we highly recommend the Silver Oaks Ranch. It is one of the best places we've had the privilege of renting during our many years of vacationing.

I'll try to make this short and sweet. Come here if you want to stay at a really nice place with really nice people (and goats). It really is an adorable place with nice views and all the amenities. Someone else said to just bring a toothbrush and cloths; you really can almost do just that. They have snorkeling and boogie boards plus beach towels on top of niceties like shampoo some sunscreen and now some aloe that we left behind.

The owners are super nice. Rick is a photographer and took us on a half day photo adventure to the Waipio Valley which we got to see like very few others. They pointed us to all the right places which turned a good vacation into a great one.

So if you're looking for a great place off the beaten path, stay there.

Room Tip: We like the room with the hot tub but both look nice and there is a garage between the two so it fee...

Frommer’s Hawaii simply said “Book this place” and how true that is.
It is located just off Highway 190, overlooking Kona and the coast, thus providing good views of the coast, and often outstanding sunset views. It is 1500 feet above sea level, so that nights are comfortably cool. And yet it is only a 10-15 minute drive to Ali’I Drive
Our accommodation was excellent – we were in The Ranch House Cottage which had a full kitchen, separate sitting room and bedroom and walk in wardrobe. A daily breakfast is not provided, but there is a welcome basket containing a wide range of foods.
Our cottage had a TV and DVD player, as well as a computer. There are very useful things available such as snorkelling equipment, and beach towels, and cool boxes, and laundry facilities. We were provided with a mobile phone, when it turned out we couldn’t use ours in America
Amy and Rick are very helpful with advice on places to visit. It is very private: you are left to yourselves, but Amy and Rick are readily available if needed.
We have no hesitation in recommending Silver Oaks Ranch. We would definitely stay there again, should we visit Kona in the future.
