Reviewed 25 November 2010

I stayed at the Silver Oaks Ranch (in the Garden Cottage) for 4 weeks in October/November, 2010 during a month long internship in Kona. Absolutely everything about my stay was wonderful. At the ranch you will be provided with tons of space and privacy, within an easy 10-15 minute drive to downtown Kona. The Garden Cottage is the smallest of their guest houses, but it is well equipped with a hot plate, microwave, mini-frig, bbq grill, iron and ironing board, furnished patio, carport, washer and dryer, beach/snorkeling equipment, cable tv, dvd player, laptop with internet access, and more. The larger guest houses have more space and full kitchens, but the Garden Cottage was perfect for my needs. Amy and Rick are gracious hosts, and went out of their way to make sure my stay was a pleasant one. It is obvious they have put much thought into providing everything their guests could possibly need and want, and encouraged me multiple times throughout my stay to let them know if there was anything else I needed. They are also very knowledgeable about the island and were a great help in planning several day trips. The views from the property are awesome (especially at sunset), and the animals are great (though out of the way, if you're not an animal-lover as I am). I will echo the previous reviews that the fresh eggs are delicious. This place is truly a gem and I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else.

I traveled to Kona with a friend and we decided to stay at Silver Oaks because they had amazing reviews and the place sounded like it had a great bed and breakfast style quality to it. Our expectations were far surpassed. Rick was a wonderful host and super accommodating. We stayed in the ranch house and had a full kitchen at our disposal. We ate delicious fresh farm eggs every morning and were witness to gorgeous sunsets from the deck. The property is wonderful and its easy to feel right at home with all of the amenities and the privacy. I would recommend staying here to anyone traveling to Kona looking to try something off the beaten path. This place is one of a kind and I hope to go back one day.

My wife and I stayed six nights in the Ranch House. Beautiful views, a very different Hawaii experience, which is what we wanted. We've stayed at the places on the beach and they all kind of blend in together. This is about 1500 feet up the mountain, about 10 degrees cooler than at sea level, and it is so private and quiet. The ranch has goats, chickens, a horse, a donkey that is currently pregnant, and some cats that made us feel like we were at home (if you aren't a cat lover, they will stay away, and they aren't allowed in the units, so don't worry about that).

You get as many eggs as you can eat as they have some good egg-layers and boy do the eggs taste good. They provide you with a few staples that last several days for breakfast and snacks. We sat outside some and it is so quiet, you only hear the birds and sometimes the goats and chickens. The owner gave us a great tour of the ranch, discussing the animals and all the varieties of plants that exist on their 10 acre property.

Add in the private outdoor jacuzzi and the available washer/dryer, beach stuff, and it was a fantastic experience!

Away from the typical tourist hustle bustle, Silver Oaks Ranch perches on a hill with a view of the low lands and the sea in the distance. We heard birds all day including the occasional gobble-off from the resident wild turkeys. Amy and Rick provided a beautiful, sunlit bungalow with a large covered porch which was perfect for card games and reading. The multiple amenities included beach accessories of all kinds, a fully equipped kitchen, gas bbq, computer with highspeed internet, access to a washer/dryer and fresh laid eggs from their chickens. Amy is a goat breeder and we were lucky to be there during birthing season. The babies were beautiful, soft and friendly. 15 minutes down the hill is all the hustle and bustle you might want plus some great snorkeling. We loved it and hope to go back.

It was my 50th birthday so we decided to take our first trip to Hawaii. Thank you Trip Advisor and all the previous reviewers for introducing us to the Silver Oaks Ranch. It was the perfect place to stay on the Big Island.. Thank you Amy and Rick for being fantastic hosts and cool people.

Rick is a great photographer and has figured out how to get to every perfect angle on the island so you can plan excellent day trips and see all the best places.

We stayed 5 nights in the Ranch House Cottage and will ask for it again next time.

Totally agree with an earlier review "More space and privacy than a B&B. Not quite as big as a Condo but outfitted as well, if not better, with a hot tub, fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher and laundry"

The view of the Kona coast from the ranch is unbelievable. You really can see forty miles of the stunning Kona coastline. You feel away from it all but you are simple 5 minute drive to town.

We saved money and used the spotless kitchen a lot. Enjoyed the ranch eggs and fruit. Really cool be able to make a pot of Kona coffee instead of looking for a Starbucks.

We stayed in Ranch View Cottage, which was lovely. All amenities were present and the view from the house was great. Our 4-year old daughter loved to run out of the house first thing in the morning to greet the goats and Gigi, the cat. Our hosts were very attentive and made sure we didn't lack anything. Upon arrival, we received a welcome pack which included breakfast items that lasted for quite a few days, home-grown bananas and papayas. All around, it was a great experience.

We arrived in the evening and were met by both of our hosts, Rick and Amy. Right from the start we knew that we would be having a wonderful time at the ranch. We were made to feel at home, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Rick showed us to our room, and gave us the option of choosing one of the larger suites since they had no other guests scheduled for our week. Our original room, the cottage, was very inviting, but we wanted to see what the others looked like. We decided to upgrade to one of the larger suites, and really enjoyed the additional space, even though there was only the two of us. The suite had ALL the imenities of home. Full size fridge, stove, mini dish washer. The fridge was stocked with a great assortment of breakfast foods...eggs, butter, bagels, Hawaiian sweet bread, creme cheese, milk, juice. The great room had the TV and computer with web access. In the bedroom was a cushy king size bed, all the towels you could want, and plenty of space to put your belongings. The bath had a copius amount of space and a jacuzzi tub.
Outside was the critters. We were introduced to the goats, chickens, wild turkeys, pheasants, doves, and to our two most special friend s"Donkey", and Gigi. The view from the ranch is spectacular, and the weather is great. Low to mid 80's during the day, and mid 60's by night, which made for great sleeping.
Rick is great for information on where to go and how to get there. He gave us good reccomendations for things to do and places to eat( you have to go to Quinns!).
We have stayed in many B&B's across the country, and this one rates right up there at the top! The Deckers run a first rate B&B and if going to the "Big Island" I wouldn't stay anywhere else!!
