I stayed at the Kona Makai back in June. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 short nights. The grounds are well kept; grassy areas with lawn furniture go right down to the lava shoreline. Our unit was on the top floor with a beautifully decorated master bedroom (gorgeous sleigh bed and pineapple brass lamps) with its own balcony and another loft bedroom. It was clean and well furnished with up-to-date kitchen appliances. There were ants in the kitchen, but not out of control. With our limited time we didn't get to use the pool, bbq or spa, but the sunset was fabulous even in the rare drizzle the first night we were there. I met some residents who were friendly and who still go to the shore to watch the sunsets almost nightly. The only drawback is that there are no elevators, so carrying luggage upstairs was difficult. I had checked this with the rental agency beforehand, so it was not a surprise. And there is only one parking area, so if you are on the other side of the property you have to walk across the lawn. Overall, I would definitely recommend Kona Makai.
