Stayed here 4 nights - 2nd floor ocean front room
Pretty good location with wonderful views of ocean and crashing waves occupied by surfers most of the time.

Reasonably comfortable with plenty of space for 2 - disappointing the bed was just a normal queen size (just used to so much bigger in the US)

Accommodation looking quite tired now and needs revamping with paint and furnishings

Nice spot for exploring West Coast of Big Island

We stayed here in a one bedroom for 3 nights. I’d booked a Garden View, but the unit still had a great ocean view of the waves crashing on the shore, so I’m glad I didn’t spend the extra money on an ocean view unit. I can't remember which unit we stayed but we were just above the ground floor.

We booked through Castle Resorts, which has maid service and you don’t have to clean the unit. They even do the dishes at the end of your stay. The unit wasn’t fancy but it was clean and there were no bugs. The parking was free and we always found a space.
There is pool and jacuzzi and bbqs (area open 8am - 10 pm)

The only issue I had with this place is that all the lanais, except the ocean front ones, face each other which limits privacy.

We stayed in room E 37 From Nov 14 to 22nd. The location of the hotel wasn't too bad, it had a washer and dryer which helped, and basics like salt/pepper, diswashing soap, etc. etc. were there so we didn't have to go out and buy them. Unfortunately that is where the good ended. We complained 3 times to the office about a dead fish smell coming from the garborator and sliding glass doors which were broken and wouldn't lock (we slept and went out every day with our room unlocked because of this). Nothing was ever done to help us out. The cleaning service was terrible. Our bed was made once in the 8 days we were there, the towels were only changed once after begging the maid for new ones, the floors we never swept , mopped or vacuumed and the old style key system to the room and pool were very inconvienent. The olny saving grace was this place is in Hawaii and it's virtually impossible to be unhappy in Hawaii.

I stayed at the Kona Reef in September 2008 for a week as part of a Raintree Vacation Club (i.e. Timeshare) booking. There is an office operated by Club Regina that handles most timeshare bookings, and they oversee about 15-18 rooms on-site. There is a separate office used for traditional hotel bookings.

I stayed in unit E-3 (ground floor), and the room definitely showed it's age. The good news is that they are doing work on some of the rooms to refresh and update, but I didn't inquire about the timing and which rooms were being updated. The 'hospitality room' (a room set-aside on departure day so travelers can get one last shower in before heading to the airport) was just finishing an update and looked very nice.

Location was very good - less than a 5 minute walk to the southern edge of Kona's shopping & restaurant district (there is no restaurant on-site). They have plenty of free parking, a very nice pool, and a public beach on the south side of the property. If you go into the water, be very careful as sea urchins are quite numerous (and painful to step on!). I'd recommend the pool or going out to hit one of the many nice beaches on the island.

Our unit had a bedroom, kitchenette and living room with a Murphy bed. We were able to make some of our meals and sit out on the lanai to eat, which was a nice touch. The unit also had a dishwasher and washer/dryer ensuite.

We spent most of our time away from the hotel, but for a nice quiet hotel to return to for sleep and cooking the occasional meal the Royal Kona was more than adequate. I would stay here again.

We stayed at the Kona Reef for 2 weeks. Our unit F-12 was average. We had a great view of the ocean and a little beach area off to the side of the resort. The bedroom was nice. Enough closet space and a dresser. The bed was a little too hard for my comfort. The kitchen and living room were very nice. Clean. The kitchen had all the standard untensils and a few pots and pans. In my opinion though, not enough pots and pans. You got about 4 each of plates, bowls and ect. So, unless you want to wash dishes daily, you will be using the dishwasher alot. The range may be on a energy saver, but I did notice that it takes awhile for the oven or stove top to heat up. I'm sure you will be grocery shopping while visting Hawaii, so I recommend that you take a look at the utensils and pots and pans to make sure that you do not buy something that you don't have the appropriate cooking supplies for. They do offer sugar for your coffee, but no salt and pepper or any other condiments to that sort. The housekeeping was good. They said that housekeeping comes by on Wed. We arrived on a Sat and they did show up Wed and then every day after that. I don't need my towels changed everyday. So even if you put a Do not Disturb sign out on the door, they will still leave you a garbage bag full of towels and sometimes sheets. If they are really washing towels everyday, that is a lot of water wasted. We had about 3 bags full of towels by the time we left. They are very polite though. The Lanai is nice. Every morning we would go out there and listen to the ocean while we had breakfast and read. They have a few grills down stairs by the pool area, so that was really nice too. Pool and hot tub are good. Hot tub, not very hot though. Warm bath temp. VERY close to the town area. Within walking distance, which made eating out and shopping that much easier. We enjoyed our stayed.

I guess it must be true that it depends on what unit you're staying in. I've read some good reviews and some bad of the Kona Reef.

We just returned from our vacation and staying in D-22 was awesome. Obviously, the owners take great care of this place. It's a three bedroom unit. We had a group of six and there was plenty of room. The unit was well stocked with plenty of towels, beach towels, cooking untensils, you name it. It was very clean.

We had the ac go out while we were there. A simple phone call to Abbey Vacation Rentals and they had someone out the next day to fix it (placed call on a Sunday Night).

The unit is on the third floor and ocean front. The side also overlooks the pool area.

The grounds were very well maintained. The staff cleaned the bbqs daily. From our lanai, we were able to see the pool guy check the pool and hot tub water daily. Lawns, trees, and shrubs were kept nice and trim. No signs of garbage anywhere.

We would definitely stay there again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone needing a three bedroom condo.

Sure wish we were still there!

Each unit is individually owned. So what you get all depends on which unit you stay in. Our first night was in 1A and it was pretty bad. There was no privacy and it was dirty. It is next to a little public beach and there are people walking by your unit 24 hours a day. The A/C was so rusty, I thought it was going to fall out of the wall. There is no central A/C. There were mice droppings in the dresser drawer.

The last 3 nights were in D8 and it was very nice. It was well maintained and furnished very nicely. Since it was not next to the little beach it was very nice, but still people walk thru in front of your lanai all the time.

The only way I would stay here again is if I was guaranteed an ocean front room on 2 floor or higher in Building A or D. I would not want to stay on the first floor again. There is no privacy and you certainly cannot leave your patio doors open at night to get a breeze and hear the ocean.

The management staff is very helpful. It is in easy walking distance to restaurants and shops. Bubba Gumps is a good place to eat.
