“Nice place”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

Overall good one bedroom on ground floor, apparently 2 bedrooms above. Flat screen TV. Pay internet. Enjoyed watching birds out deck. Kitchen counter space was a bit small. As others had mentioned had to walk a bit to parking garage. One irritant was they did not seen to police the limited parking at checkin. A number of vehicles parked there all the time and sometimes people checking in had no place to park. We did arrange several activities thru the expedia person Paige. She was great to work with. One other irritant was some loud humming noise outside our bedroom wall, we should have inquired at desk earlier.

This was our second stay at Mauna Loa, and it was just as nice as the first. At home we live in a very quiet spot, so we often have trouble when we travel because no place is as quiet as home. But the Mauna Loa is perfectly situated in a quiet area, but convenient to the water, shopping and restaurants. You couldn't ask for nicer people to make your visit perfect.

We stayed here for 9 days through Trading Places and it was very nice. We had an upstairs 2 bedroom that was one that was not yet remodeled (kind of golden girls decor) but it was very clean, very big, and all on one level. Everything was well maintained. The pool right near us had a crack in it so it was under construction but there was no noise and it was a very short walk to the next pool area. My only complaints were that the master bath lighting was dim and the screen door didn't really slide, the parking is not right outside your door and i prefer more hangers in the closets. 1st world problems, I didn't mention it to them but i'm sure if I had they would've been right on it. The remote control air conditioning in each room was really convenient, the beds soo comfortable, the plumeria blooming along the walkways scented your entry & exits. The stacking washer & dryer was in a little closet in the living room but was not too noisy and was very convenient. The way this place really shines is the staff. The lady at the front desk went way above and beyond for us and everyone was so acomodating and friendly. It's about a 20 minuite drive into Kona so you need a rental car to get to the beaches, restaurants and shopping but the Sheraton is within walking distance. Longs drugstore and a good grocery is just a short drive away.

This has not changed, still lovely apartments in beautiful gardens. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment (7-48) which was spacious and well maintained. Pools and spas were never busy, regularly checked and we really enjoyed a night time swim in the warm pool. Well situated for trips to the volcano and the mountain. Supermarket close by.

We stayed the night of August 15th. The staff was very friendly. We got a ride on a golf cart to our building. It was quite far from the parking garage. We had a 2 bedroom unit not facing the ocean. We had several steps to walk up to our building. It was clean. The pool closest to use was closed and another one close was open. We had spent 2 nights at The Hilton Waikaloa before going here.

LOCATION: Wyndham Mauna Loa Village is a timeshare condominium complex located about 7 miles south of the Kailua Kona town center on the big island of Hawaii. There are usually a number of unoccupied units for rent, with the timeshare owners occupying the units with ocean views at peak season.

TWO RESORTS: The Manua Loa Village consists of 21 buildings with 141 one and two bedroom condominiums. There are two separate resorts here. Buildings 1-11 are part of Wyndham MLV, and buildings 12-21 are part of Holua Resorts, a Shell Vacations timeshare Resort. The two resorts have identical structured buildings, with the same designed kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, covered balconies (lanai), but different furnishings, carpet designs, and pricing structures for the room and wifi, free at Holua, costs extra at Wyndham. The furnishings also appear to be newer at Holua.

RESERVATIONS: I almost always find the prices at Holua Resort Mauna Loa to be lower than the Wyndham Mauna Loa Village, even though they are located in the same Mauna Loa Village. Go to the shellhospitality internet site, click on resorts, click on Holua, click on check availability, click on select dates. A calendar of availability and daily rates will appear. For example I got rates for the Nov 13-20, 2013 period for $98 Sunday-Thursday, and $108 Friday-Saturday. They always have a GOGREEN or REDEEM1 promo code. The best rate I could find for Wyndham Mauna Loa Village was $188 for that time period.

PICKING A DATE: To get the lowest possible air fare I had to book an airline reservation to Hawaii at least two months in advance using the kayak internet site. Flights leaving midweek are almost always cheaper than those leaving on a Saturday. I choose the days when there are direct flights from my airport, San Jose, CA , to Kailua-Kona, and this can vary from month to month.

WHAT TO PACK: There are some unique items to pack when traveling to Hawaii: a mobile GPS for the rental car, extra batteries for the digital camera, one way (leave in Hawaii) running shoes, Laptops and electronic notebooks must go through the TSA scanners, separately, so I buy a soft case for them. I load up on sunscreen in 3.5 ounce containers (the largest that TSA allows) from discount stores. I also bring my proof of car insurance, when renting a car, in case I should get into a car accident in Hawaii. I also bring along several shopping bags, as Hawaii no longer allows shopping markets to issue free grocery bags.

SNORKELING: I pack the following for snorkeling: a swim suit with a zippered pocket, one way T-shirts (to prevent sunburn on my back when snorkeling), snorkel mask with breathing tube, and a locksac for the car keys when snorkeling. I use duo purpose waterproof sandals that stay on my feet when kicking in the ocean, and not fins when snorkeling, to save more space. Also it is easier to stand on sand or rocks and enter or exit the ocean when using the sandals.

COSTCO: When in Hawaii at a condominium with a fully equipped kitchen, I always stock up at Costco, given the astronomical food prices in the markets. The only Costco on the big island is located a few miles from the Kailua-Kona airport on the way to the city. Take the Queen Kaahumanu highway going south, and exit left on Hina Lani, make a right onto Kamanu St and then a rightonto Maiau St using your GPS. I stock up on milk (about $4.63 a gallon, not 2 gallons!), guava nectar, chocolate macadamia nuts, cereal, eggs, sausages, bread, and lunch meats, enough to cover a week's worth of breakfasts and lunches, and of course fresh pineapple. On the way back to the airport, gas up at $4.25 a gallon at Costco, the cheapest gas on the island.

THE VILLAGE: the Windham Manua Loa Village is 11 hexagonal shaped buildings, with 4 small pools and 2 BBQ grills. Check in is located just to the left of the main entrance. Our room was not ready, so we had the staff to store our perishable foods in the staff refrigerator. We parked in the partially underground parking structure next to the Holua tennis center courts, as there is no parking next to the individual buildings. The white wooden two story buildings are surrounded by immaculately trimmed vegetation -palm trees, flowers, and tropical plants, with ponds and streams running through the lush vegetation, and well maintained lawns. The area is relatively flat, and surrounded by golf courses on all but the west side, where a rocky crest marks the end of land about a quarter of a mile from the resort.

POOLS: We gave the staff our cell phone number, changed into our swim outfits, and lounged around the tiny pools, reading up on things to do on the big island. There are eight pools in the complex, with pools 1-4 for Wyndham guests, and pools 5-8 for Holua guests. Each pool requires a pool code to enter the fenced facility, complete with lounge chairs and sun umbrellas. The pool code for the Wyndham pool code is different from that of the Holua pools. Areas around the pool tend to be noisy with kids splashing and horse playing in the afternoons and early evenings. The pools are too small to do much more than wading for the adults. During our stay, the pool closest to us was closed for two days due to a child pooping in the pool.

OUR ROOM: The staff gave us a ring when our room was ready -right on the 3pm checkin time. We got a fully carpeted second floor one bedroom unit facing the interior. Our unit came with a fully equipped kitchen, including full size refrigerator, dishwasher (with detergent) , double sink, oven, microwave, toaster, plates, utensils, bowls, pots, pans. There was a washer/dryer in a closet, complete with laundry detergent. Old style CRT TVs in the bedroom and living room. Comfortable queen size bed. Living room had sofa, padded arm chairs, coffee table. Sliding doors fronting a long narrow covered balcony, with lounge chairs and table with 4 upright chairs, stretched from the living room around the bedroom. The tiles in the balcony were white hexagon shaped also. We could see our neighbors 30 feet away in a neighboring building eating their dinners every evening. Tiled bathroom counter, with full bath and two doors to the bathroom.

DESIRABLE ROOMS: the most desirable rooms are those facing the distant ocean, overlooking the next door golf course. These would include two bedroom units 3 and 4 in building 1, units 53 and 54 in building 8, units 64 and 65 in building 10, and units 70 and 71 in building 11. I don't know of any of the single bedroom units having ocean views at the Wyndham. Note that the two bedroom units have bedrooms on the 1st floor to keep cool, and the living rooms and kitchen on the top floor. Buildings 9,10, and 11 are closest to the parking garage, so you have a shorter distance to walk to your car, and a shorter distance to lug your belongings and purchases. Building 11 and 10 are also closest to the ocean. In general, the Holua resort buildings are west of the Wyndham buildings, and closer to the ocean, but farther to walk from the parking garage.

AMENITIES: Free AC. This is a big deal as utility bills on the big island can easily average $300-$400 a month. Some condominimum complexes like the Kona Coast Resort 1.5 miles north, charge up to $13 a day for AC. Wifi is an extra cost at the Wyndham, which we didn't bother with, as there are a number of places in Kailua Kona with free wifi, including the Lava Java restaurant. Cable TV.

KEAUHOU shopping center is located 1.5 miles north of the village. Restaurants here include: Subway, L & Ls, Habanero's , Bianelli's, Royal Thai, and Sam Choy's, listed in order of price, lowest to highest . Hula dancing performed every Friday next to the KTA supermarket. There is also a post office, an urgent care center, and Long's, along with a movie theater playing newly released films.

KAHALUU beach park is located about 2 miles north of the village. This is an excellent place to snorkel with a protected area delineated by a man made barrier about a quarter of a mile out. The beach is fully equipped with snorkel equipment to rent, refreshments, and showers.

ELECTRONIC KEY: My rental car key came with a warning: do not immerse in water -$140 replacement cost. I purchased a locsac at a local dive shop years ago. This is a triple sealed water proof plastic pouch, kind of like a super zip lock sandwhich bag. Before leaving for the beach, I put my wallet under the spare tire area of the car trunk. I put my car keys in the locsac, and placed the folded pouch in my zippered swim suit back pocket, while snorkeling. The key stayed dry every time, after hours in the ocean.

MANTA RAYS: The Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort features manta ray watching at night using spotlights on the ocean surface. They also have live music every Wednesday night. And there's a farmer's market 9am-2pm every Wednesday in the grassy area next door. To reach the mana ray watching, walk along south of the Wyndham toward the Sheraton, staying to the right along the edge of the hotel, and continuing to the very end of the hotel. It's about a 10 minute walk.

FREE SHUTTLE: A free shuttle trolley runs hourly between the Kailua Kona city center and the the Sheraton next door, stopping by the Keauhou shopping center near Longs.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS: The main attractions on the big island are Volcanoes National Park, and Mauna Kea observatory. Both of these are primarily night time activities, when you can see the glow of the volcano lava at dusk. However these are on the opposite side of the island about 100 miles and 3 hours away. Returning late at night on the Saddle road, or the windy two lane highway 11 involves darkness, blind curves and frequent misting.

TIMESHARES: Wyndham Mauna Loa is a timeshare facility. All guests are invited to prize giveaways, usually severe discounts on local activities, like ziplines, helicopter tours etc. In return you get to listen to a scheduled 90 minute timeshare sales presentation. Note that next door to the Wyndham resort is the road layout for an abandoned timeshare condominium complex. And in Kaiula Kona next to Lava Java restuarant is a store which sells used timeshares -the Hilton timeshares were going for $6000, a small fraction of the original cost. The advantage of a timeshare is that the timeshare owner gets first choice in picking the best timeshare units at the peak periods, up to a year in advance. The disadvantage is that they have very diminished resale value, and timeshare owners have to pay ever increasing annual maintenance costs, which can run into the thousands of dollars. .

Room Tip: I would try the Holua Resort next door, as it is far cheaper, and closer to the ocean. However if I...
