“An Excellent Pension”
Reviewed 2 August 2013

Pod Zamkem is a small and very nicely renovated pension. The room was small but comfortable. The restaurant is absolutely first class with marvellous food and a good wine list. The terrace on the canal with a stunning view of the castle has got to be the top spot to eat in JH. We will certainly stay here again on our next visit to JH.

This B&B has got unbeatable location, nice terrace with a stunning castle view, cosy and pleasant rooms (some of them with balcony) but the absolute highlight is their restaurant.
Try their carp fries, the local speciality or the garlic soup is excellent.
Service is excellent and their home made cakes are to die for.
There is parking available in the front of the B&B and there is also secure parking for motorbikes.

Room Tip: Always choose a room with the castle view.

Reviewed 2 July 2012

We traveled around the Czech Republic for two weeks and no matter how much or how little English was spoken, we felt welcome and at home every where except here.

The building is old and interesting and well reconstructed. The location is excellent: across the river and not too far from the delightful main square.
But, the Penzion is on a narrow street with no outlet. Knowing that well after entering the street, my husband had to back out quite a long way delicately positioned between stone walls and automobiles. (I don't think I could have done it.) There is parking: up a hill and about 3 blocks away in an industrial complex with no indication that this is where the parking is for the pension. We figured it out by trying the key we were given for the lot in the two most probable though unlikely looking alternatives. When the key fit we left the car. Only then did we see a sign - dirty and broken - that this was indeed the parking area. There had been nothing near the entrance to clue us in and the map we had been given was ambiguous.

Since we were blocking the street we were given the keys before showing our passports. As soon as we returned from our parking adventure, that was taken care of. There was no indication of where the room was and eventually we found someone who waved in the direction of the stairs.

Our room was OK. We did request one of the least expensive rooms and one on a floor without too many steps. We were in room 3, one flight up, and our room overlooked the narrow street and a construction site. We could hear everyone who entered or exited the pension and their conversations. The room was not large and it was hard to move around. The worst feature was that the bathroom was a step down and it was very hard to see where that step was. We left the bathroom light on all night to prevent an accident. The bathroom itself was fine though we did not have the toiletries that are shown in the website photo.

Breakfast was not the usual buffet. A basket of rolls, and a pitcher of juice were on the table and you selected from a large list of possible breakfast entrees. Perhaps you could have chosen more than one thing to get a more balanced breakfast but that was unclear. We ordered one each.

Others may have different experiences. We met a woman, when we were trying to communicate that we had a reservation, who loved this place, and had in fact gotten married there. She highly recommended the food but we chose to find some place else for dinner rather than expose ourselves to more apathy.

Room Tip: Pay extra and get the river side of the hotel
