We were in the house down the street from the main hostel, that being said good points and bad points. There was no coffee provide here( there was some instant in the window seal that was as hard as the salt. The bed was clean and comfortable, and the second night we did end up having the whole place to ourself.

I am the South African that stayed in September 2013.
The following need attention:
1. No reception during the day until 7pm. Nobody answers the phone until 7pm.
2. The check in time is 7pm. I arrived at 11am and had to wait until 7pm before I could speak to anybody. I could not store my luggage anywhere and wasted one day of my precious holiday because of this.
3. Some matresses's springs stuck you in the ribs at night. These should have been replaced and not be on beds.
4. There are too many guests sharing a bathroom and kitchen. We were 16 sharing one bathroom and small kitchen in the Moby Dick Annex.
5. You pay one dollar for a clean towel. When you book for non sharing you get a good quality towel. The towels for sharing bookings are worn out and should not be in use any more. I cannot understand why the linen and towels for the sharing option is different? The sharing option has the lower quality linen and towels.
6. The non sharing option is quite expensive. I cannot understand why I had to pay this much higher rate and still share a bathroom with other people.
7. I shared for three nights with four others. The room had no hooks/cupboard to hang your clothes. THere was no shelves to pack out your clothes. You had to live from your backpack or suitcase.
8. The rates at this establishment is not cheap. I am amazed about the lack of service in that there is no reception until 7pm. You must pay 1 dollar for 2 tea bags! Does not make sense.

This is a nice and affordable place to stay for a group of people. The owners are quite friendly. It has both hostel style dorm and private room. The first days we stay in a dorm accommodates six people. the first layer of sheet of bed was not that clean, anyway, you will place another sheet on it, so it's acceptable. The second day, we stay at a private room which locates in an independent house (as shown in picture) about 1 mile from the main building, this room is pretty nice with shared kitchen and bath room, but no wifi. All in all, this place is a good and cozy place to stay when you visit Seward.

This is a hostel with a few rooms with shared baths. I stayed in a room and shared a bath with another room. It was clean, although the lighting in the bathroom was very poor. My issues with this facility were two fold. One the stairs were very steep, old and narrow. I am a fit 65 year old, but I was very careful coming down the stairs with luggage. They need better handrails on those old stairs. Two as a single traveler I paid too much for the room. It was a large room with a double and a single bed. It would be appropriate for the hotel to give a small discount for a single traveler instead of a couple or three person occupancy. It was kind of old and funky, but adequate otherwise.

Room Tip: If you are a three person occupancy, the room at the right at the top of the stairs I stayed in woul...

We booked the room with an efficient kitchenette. Bathroom was right outside the room and kept very clean. Ample space for two of us to spread out. View was perfect to enjoy the bay and mountains. Walking distance to downtown, but still very quiet location. Steps were a little steep to get up to the 2nd floor - no biggie, but something to keep in mind if that might be an issue for you.

Moby Dick is the best value in Seward. We stayed in the smaller lodging room which had a kitchenette, double and twin bed, right across from the shared bath. The kitchenette was well stocked with cookware/dishes/hot plate/small refridge and FREE coffee! Nice touch. It was very clean - felt welcoming and comfy.
Suzanne and her daugher, Merit, were wonderful - very helpful and fun to talk with. They were spot-on about places to eat, get excellent coffee, and gifts. Suzanne was kind enough to let us leave out bags and use the common area in the hostel next door before we headed out on the train later in the day - really helped us out.
The hostel is located about 2 blocks from "downtown" Seward, so everything is convenient. We loved Seward and Moby Dick only added to our excellent time there!

Room Tip: The smaller lodging room was just right and a great deal - worth a few more dollars if you want some...

This turned out to be a great place to stay. We stayed both times we were in Seward. We had never stayed at a hostel before but it was very nice and we would recommend it to anyone. We liked the private room upstairs the best. The owners were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: We liked the private room with a view of Resurrection Bay!
