What a shock, complete opposite of what we were promised for our first night in Seward. When booking this hotel online, I thought it would be a nice, historic introduction to Alaska. Our room was on the first floor, end of hall, cold and drafty, with two views about eye level of the alley and dump behind the hotel. But what made the room unacceptable was its filth (food on floor, dried and crusted) and an alley-window that was rotted, broken and stuck open. When I brought these safety issues to the attention of the front desk, I was met with blank stares, and defensive and self-righteous attitude, and absolutely no help. They refused to move us or refund the VERY expensive cost ($197.00) It was worst than a hostel and is absolutely unadvisable for families or those who value their safety, privacy, and health. I don't wish this hotel on those I despise.
NOTE: I called the chamber of commerce to complain and am filing a complaint. They promised to see what they could do as it reflects on what is otherwise a lovely, charming town. I encourage anyone else in a similar situation to do the same. Down street found the wonderful Hotel Seward -- recommend this hotel whose staff seemed sympathetic to our plight at the Hotel Van Gilder.More
