From check in to check out, everything was great at the Van Gilder hotel. The staff were very welcoming. Our room was very clean and comfortable, especially the bed. The room darkening blinds were much appreciated. The Breakfast average but not a highlight, for that I preferred to go to SeaBean Coffeeshop. But other than that, I like the history of the Hotel.

From check in to check out, everything was great at the Van Gilder hotel. The staff were very welcoming. Our room was very clean and comfortable, especially the bed. The room darkening blinds were much appreciated. The continental breakfast food in the parlor was above average and the cookies were a nice touch. We were pleasantly surprised by the guest kitchen facilities including the large frig/freezer.

We were able to reserve the "Ghost" suite at the last minute at a very good rate (for the summer). As Alaskans, it can be difficult to get reservations at good rates. The rooms were clean and everything worked. The staff were friendly, well informed and all our needs were met with alacrity. We had use of the kitchen to store food and cook. The Continental breakfast was well stocked. I cooked a steak I purchased and eggs were provided by the hotel. Fresh cookies were provided throughout the day, as well as hot coffee. Wonderful experience. 4 stars.

Room Tip: The Ghost suite has a very good view of the mountains and Resurrection. Bay.

We were not sure of what to expect in the Van Gilder, but were pleasantly surprised. We had no view at all out of our room, but didn't seem to mind. There is a kitchen they let you have access to and one day we actually got yummy homemade cookies made by the staff. There is a very tiny parlor with a few breakfast items in the morning and a nice place to play some cards. Next door is the movie theater if you are in the mood for a flick. We got a room with our own bathroom. All hotels are crazy-expensive in Alaska during summer. We found the best deal here at the Van Gilder. We spent one night at the Windsong in Seward and felt a little ripped off by the crazy price there.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor. We could hear people above us and every flush of toilet/shower, but did not have to hike our heavy luggage up a flight of stairs. If a room with a view or a bathroom is important, make sure to ask for one. If going in summer 2012 get the Alaska TourSaver coupon book for a discount.

We used a 2-for-1 coupon and spent two nights at the Van Gilder. Room was on the small side, but comfortable and cozy. It was showing its age quite a bit, but that didn't prevent us from having a very positive experience there. We stayed on the second floor, just above the front desk.
