“Good trip and lodging!”
Reviewed 11 September 2013

We chartered a combination halibut/salmon all day fishing trip and stayed at the Dairy Hill Lodging the night before. It was a very good trip and comfortable lodging. Boat Captain Jim and Deck Hand Sam were very entertaining and knowledgeable during the entire trip while being very attentive and intent on trying to help us catch fish. We were very successful, catching limits in halibut and salmon and we caught a few other species as well. Captain Jim seemed to know right where to go and we caught fish as soon as we dropped anchor. We also saw lots of wildlife along the way, whales, puffins, etc. The lodging was beautifully decorated and very roomy (stayed in the queen room that included queen bed, private bath and kitchen facilities). The lodge-keeper, Kathleen, went well out of her way to see that we were transported to and from the fishing pier even though she had a lot on her plate for the weekend, managing another lodge location and meeting with friends and family. We would definitely recommend and stay here again if we are planning another such trip!

“Excellent day trip”
Reviewed 13 August 2013 via mobile

We chartered the boat for the day for our family of 5. 3 kids age 13,11 and 8. We had so much fun. We saw the glaciers and wildlife. We saw sea otters, seals, puffins, whales, star fish, sea lions, bald eagles. The glacier was very cool. Jim was an excellent captain and guide. Great for kids. He used to be a middle school teacher. Note to parents: bring warm clothes and water proof gloves. We had ski coats on with rain coat and rain pants and ski hats. We we not cold at all. After we saw the wildlife we went fishing. Great boat and guide! I was great night to be on a crowded tour boat! Thanks Jim!

“Amazing trip!”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

We stayed at the Dairy Hill Lodge (under the same management as Saltwater Lodge) and went on their whale watching boat trip, as well. The lodging was good, spacious, with sink and small refrigerator so we had breakfast in our room; also very close to town so we could walk to restaurants.

But it was the boat trip that knocked our socks off. We went out at 8:30 and never returned until after 6:00 after a full day of wildlife viewing (sandwiches, drinks, and snacks provided). The captain, Tanya, was great at hanging around the pods of orcas or humpback whales so that we could get a good viewing. (We took a similar trip in Juneau, but that lasted only 3 hours, we hopped from "spout" to "spout" without allowing time for the whales to resurface, and were told there were no orcas in that vicinity.)

By contrast, on this Kenai fjord trip we saw multiple sightings of orcas, humpbacks (one came within a few feet of the boat), Dall's porpoise (they look like baby orcas, but small and fast), sea otters, harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, puffins, bald eagles and more. The first mate, Clay, was also available to help spot whales, provide additional information, and serve refreshments. This was a first-class outfit and while wildlife viewing is always a matter of having good luck, it seemed that their approach greatly increased the odds of a successful trip. We were also taken up close to a glacier that calved before our eyes (and ears). Thanks Tanya and Clay!!

“An enjoyable experience.”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

The Saltwater Lodge was a very clean and cozy place to stay. The owners have made it very comfortable and homey. We had spectacular views and were able to watch a bald eagle right from our room window.

The Saltwater boat tour was excellent. The boat pilot and crew were very friendly and made sure that we saw the most sights and wildlife as possible.

I would recommend both the lodge and the tour to anyone.

“Unbelievable!”
Reviewed 3 July 2013

These tours are conducted in small boats. We were able to see an abundant amount of wildlife and were able to get relatively close. Our Captain, Tanya, was knowledgeable and highly skilled. Our deckhand, Clay, was attentive and kind. Though a little more expensive than the large boats, I have to believe our experience was more personal and enjoyable. I would highly recommend this tour versus the big boats! What a great time!
