“A Michelin 3 star of getaways!”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

(Michelin 3 star meaning its worth the trip to Alaska just to visit Orca island cabins.....)

I fell for Orca island cabins after CNN mentioned it in one of their travel pages related to private islands. After having multiple conversations with Susan, I booked this place months in advance as i wanted one of the yurts on the island.

Susan and Dennis are great hosts! They have maintained the property well, give you precise instructions & take great care of you. I've never felt more welcoming:)

This was a surprise for my husband, and I asked Yen (the operations manager) to arrange for something. She suggested Cake from a local bakery and alaskan Beer. Everything was in our cabin before we arrived :) She even had the presence of mind to include his name. Very sweet of her :)

The Yurt - Cant ask for more in the wilderness. The kitchen had everything we wanted to cook a full fledged Indian meal. Shower area is small, but manageable. The large sky light looks great during the day - but make sure you have eye masks on to be able to sleep at night (Yes, 5 AM is Bright in Seward). Every yurt has a private deck & the ones on the island have the best views.

The front decks - I have no words to describe the view from the decks ! Don't worry too much if the view from your yurt isn't that good - you can always hang out at one of the front decks. There is one on the upper level and one on the lower level. The lower level one has unobstructed views, and the upper one has a roof & surrounded by trees, so good to hang out when it is sunny. The only caveat is the decks are shared by all guests.

Kayaking - Although its sea kayaking, it is in a secluded cove, so i found it safe! Lots of wildlife around:) We did not see whales during our stay, but they are known to hang out in that area. So you might get lucky and see one from your deck!

Book it during the week and you might end up with the whole island to yourself - that is an experience by itself !! We had the island to ourselves on day 2 as all other guests left...so that was a bonus for us!
Pair this stay with a journey aboard alaska railroad (preferably goldclass) from Anchorage to Seward for a truly unforgettable vacation.

Room Tip: Island yurts are the best (Kittiwake, Murrel, Oystercatcher in that order), although all rooms have...

We stayed in one of the yurts for only one night. We were driven out on the boat and dropped off. The yurts are well appointed with all necessities and the property is beautiful. We kayaked with porpoises, and a seal with eagles overhead. It was idyllic. Will return and stay more than one night!!!

What a terrific experience. We stayed 2 nights and truly enjoyed our "glamping" experience. Dennis and Susan were great hosts, but I must say we really enjoyed feeling like we have been dropped off in a small cove of paradise!

Pluses:
- The yurts were as described and while they are "no frills" have all the basic amenities you need and the bed was surprisingly comfortable
- Enjoyed using the kayaks and row boat (and appreciate that they have basic fishing stuff available to try some dock fishing
- The views are spectacular!
- We enjoyed cooking our meals and not having access to a store etc. Makes you really have to plan your visit and if you forgot to bring it, then you will have to do without.
- Romantic and VERY QUIET setting. Bring lots of books, movies etc

Minuses
- Wish we would have stayed 3 nights!
- Very little spices for cooking so keep that in mind when you are planning your visit to the grocery store (they do have salt, pepper)
- There is not a lot to do on the island (which isn't necessarily a negative) so be prepared for lots of great R & R!
- We ran out of WINE! Argh

Seriously, I would recommend this place to everyone that is looking for a quiet, romantic, unique getaway that will blow your mind with beauty and privacy!

From the boat ride out from Seward, to the accommodations and wonderful hosts this is the perfect getaway from civilization spot. Fishing, kayaking and most of all just the serenity of peace with nature. Bring in what food/drink you need for your stay and you'll never forget this trip. Stay at least 2 nights for the best pleasure. If we ever get back to Alaska this will be on our agenda.

Are you kidding? This place was amazing. We are kayakers and were so excited to visit Orca Island Cabins on our first trip to Alaska. It sure wasn't a disappointment. We loved our yurt and the owners were great. We had fun watching the porpoises, otters, jelly fish, eagles, fish and sea lions right outside our door every day. Kayak just a bit and you'll see an amazing waterfall - we even saw puffins. Alaska is beautiful but nothing beat the serenity we experienced here. I would go back again and again. Thank you for creating such a beautiful getaway, Susan and Dennis!

We absolutely loved our 2 night stay at the remote Orca Island Cabins! Dennis and Susan were great hosts and we made full use of all the amenities they had to offer: kayaking (both individual and double), paddle boarding, row boating, fishing, exploring, and just hanging out enjoying the spectacular views and wildlife! The yurts were decently equipped and heated so it was easy to relax and be comfortable. We had a variety of weather, everything from fog and rain to bright sunshine so I would say we really lucked out considering "perfect" weather in Alaska is never a given. We made 3 kayak trips to see the waterfall, river otter family, porpoise pods, and salmon spawning, all in different weather, sea conditions, and levels of tide. We caught pink salmon and rockfish with the fishing gear and boats provided. We had a great time trying our luck with the stand up paddle boards and wet suits (also provided)! Just a heads up that bad weather or rough seas could limit your activity to some degree, and it is true that you are in a remote area, so be ready for some down time, spotty cell service, limited electric power, twilight all night, and no crowds(yay!), but that is exactly what we were looking for! Bring your favorite "camp food" and ice, every yurt has it's own grill complete with an amazing view! Just a few tips, charge your camera and phone ahead of time and maybe throw in some extra batteries, also bring a sleep mask if you need darkness to sleep. The yurts have a large central sunlight and run primarily on solar power with a little help from a generator on cloudy days. We were able to charge our camera phones when the generator was on or the sun was out which was all we needed, but you don't want to come in hopes of charging all your high power electronic stuff. We wish we had booked 3 nights, especially since we left on a glorious sunshine day, but suggest booking at least 2.

I hardly have words to describe Orca Island. We had a fantastic time! The island was beautiful, the sea kayaking to the water falls was fantastic, and we also enjoyed just sitting on one of the decks and staring out at the beautiful scenery for hours. Everything you could need or want is provided for you on the island and in your yurt. You have a lot of things to keep you busy if you want to be, or your yurts and private decks give you the option to just relax. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that we did not stay longer!!! I really plan on going back and staying more than one night! Just amazing!! I feel bad for people that visit Seward and miss out on this hidden gem!
