We visited this haven in the clouds for 3 nights at the end of July with our 8 and 10 year olds. It is around 90 mins by car from the airport and the journey was broken up by our friendly driver, Hector, who made a detour to a local roadside eatery. A fun and gentle introduction to the country.
The last 9km of the drive is off road which tells you how far off the radar the hotel is. If you are looking for a place with a 'buzz' then this hotel would not be for you. However, if you after a peaceful, away from it all, destination you won't be disappointed.
The staff are all excellent without exception, from the ever present Bryan and Roxanna on front desk to the waiting staff. The food is very good with a nice mixture of local dishes to more familiar fare and the wine is reasonably priced too considering you are a captive audience. The children's menu is not extensive but our fussy girls found enough to please them. Being so isolated one suggestion we'd make would be to allow kids the to have the option of choosing a smaller version from the adult menu. The care we received can best be shown when we cancelled our evening meal because the girls were too tired for a later than usual meal, so the restaurant delivered our order to our casita. Eating curled up in front of a log fire was perfect.

The Casita we stayed in (No 27) was a semi detached cottage and was plenty big enough for us. The bathroom had a whirlpool bath and a separate shower. The girls loved the bath! They also loved the leaf cutter ants who 'lived' outside our casita and the surreal moment when a friendly racoon calmly walked up to us at our outside patio table for a snack, only to return to the forest disappointed.

Being the rainy season we expected rain and for it to be a little cooler which was what we got. Sadly the cloud cover was extensive so we did not get to experience the views from the hotel over the forest others have spoken of. It would have been great to have done so but you can't have everything. Temperatures ranged from about 17c to mid 20s and a pair of long lightweight trousers is sensible especially if you take a nigh time walk in the forest. We went on one and Estaban was our knowledgable guide and we were appreciative for his sharp eyes when a Fer de Lance (snake) passed across the path right in front of us. The path is narrow and with the forest on either side it really feels you are in the wild.
A must see if you stay here is the hummingbird feeding station in the grounds. In the hotel blurb you are advised to get there for 7am but you don't need to be so prompt as the birds stay for a long time. This a brilliant way of getting up close to these fantastic birds and we spent an open mouthed hour looking at them fly around and between us. The girls loved it.
We also went on the 3 hr trip to the Arenal volcano and our guide Hiro was full of useful information about all things Costa Rica. Make sure to pack waterproofs (a poncho is a good idea). We had an almighty tropical downpour on our walk and like many visitors did not see the volcano itself as it was bathed in cloud. We did follow a family of peccary on our walk back which was an unexpected plus. The visit to the thermal pools afterwards was great and we went to the Eccothermales which are set in a beautiful natural setting next to the forest. We could have stayed there for hours.

On our last full day we went zip lining with San Luis Tours. They allow 8 yo and upwards to participate. It cost us $90 each (under 11s are $79 I think). We all absolutely loved it especially our 8yo. Davide our guide was great and full of fun and professional at the same time. There are 12 'rides' and when one of the party dipped out of one Davide offered the extra go to our 8yo who readily took up the offer. A really worthwhile trip.

To sum up, a great destination for all those who want to escape the crowds and be with nature, and with great staff who are eager to make your stay a memorable one. Not cheap but one we don't regret for a minute.

Room Tip: We stayed at Casita No 27 which was a semi detached cottage. It was perfectly adequate for us and ou...

This place was not at all what we expected! The drive to the resort is on a very nice windy road through gorgeous rolling hills. Once you turn off to the resort, the road gets a little rough (no complaints whatsoever, ignore the whiners about the road, it's very manageable) but is to be expected. I have driven similar roads around my hometown and my current town of Moab. And no, you do not need a 4 x 4. We drove all over the country in a tiny rental car during the rainy season. Upon arrival to the resort, approx. 9 km, you soon realize this place is something you would see in paintings. Absolutely stunning!!!!

The bottom line room we stayed in was fabulous. No tv, which we loved. (They have a game room with two tv's, pool table, and a movie theater.) Fireplace in the room, plenty of fan power to keep the hottest nature human (myself) cool at night. Even with the fog and rain, the views through the clouds seem fake. The reserve is definitely about nature, but even if you aren't into that, the quaint and relaxing feel is well worth your stay.

We took a night hike with Ingrid. She was a great guide, and her love for the forest is sincere. Her bright personality and excitement made the already beautiful hike more amazing. We learned so much about the ecosystem during those two hours.

The food....by far worth what you pay. Highly recommend any seafood they serve. All in all we were very pleased with our stay, and wish we could have stayed longer to explore the entirety of this reserve.

Villa Blanca is an amazingly serene place. We stayed there due to the proximity to San Jose (much much closer than the Monteverde cloud forest) for our short trip. It is about 1 hour from San Jose to San Ramon, then another 30 minutes on a bumpy dirt road to Villa Blanca. The grounds are huge and beautiful. We were there in the raining season, so it was cloudy / in a cloud the whole time, which we expected. The atmosphere of the drifting cloud banks was truly unique.

The casitas are very nice and clean with decent WiFi in every room, which we used to call home daily via Skype. There is also a fireplace loaded with wood and ready to light, cleaned and refreshed every day. The hotel lodge and rooms somehow manage to be simultaneously modern and rustic.

What really stands out at Villa Blanca was the service. Everyone was so nice and ready to help in any way. Anything we asked for was granted quickly and efficiently, including opening the restaurant early for us one day so we could do a night hike. We also enjoyed the hot tub and steam room which were opened for us upon request.

We did a day nature hike and night hike with the amazingly knowledgeable guides, who know everything about every plant and animal in the cloud forest. Ingrid in particular was amazingly good at spotting hidden animals in the forest. We also did a combined zip line and rafting tour booked through the hotel with Desafio Adventure Company. The tours had us smiling all day long. Desafio is very professional and takes safety very seriously. We did not rent a car, and the hotel was able to book all of our transportation.

The restaurant was also excellent and decently priced for the quality of food. Both the food and service were fantastic. The menu of fresh local foods changed slightly every day. Breakfast was divine. If you just need a snack, the in room minibar is reasonably priced also.

In summary, if you are looking for a beautiful and relaxing place to start or end your trip to Costa Rica, Villa Blanca is an amazing place to stay.

Let's put this in proper perspective. When my wife and I looked at our photos, we both agreed that some of them looked like paintings. That's what this place is, a painting. It's your imagination, come to life.
Then, there's the friendly and helpful staff. I wish that I could cite all for service, but I didn't get everyone's name. Christian was frequently at the front desk and was always a delight. The others, including Michael who greeted us, made us always welcome. The wait staff, in order of introduction, consisted of Enrique, Kenneth and Ronald. Each one was friendly and open and were eager to please. Esteban gave us a wonderful introduction to the research station and later was an excursion guide, always aiming to make our experience great. Antonio at the lecherria and Ingrid too were warm and friendly.

Thank you for a relaxing retreat in the mountains of Costa Rica. We loved our room, proximity to nature, delicious homemade meals, and selections at the movie theater. A special thank you to Cristian who upgraded us to the honeymoon suite! We enjoyed our Night Tour of the rain forest and saw a variety of tree frogs, an owl, and baby raccoon. I also loved the humming bird feeding each morning and have never seen so many beautiful birds in one place! If you are looking for a relaxing getaway and a unique perspective on Costa Rica's biodiversity, this is the place to go!
