The Auberge du XII Siecle (Inn of the 12th Century) in Sache, France (Loire Valley 2 hours west of Paris) came highly recommended as gastronomical wonder, definite 5 stars. We made reservations for our 10th anniversary dinner, during our "long awaited" trip to France, and we very disappointed. The quality of the food ran from "OK" to terrible. As to the service, let's just say that they did things they would never even consider doing to a French patron, e.g. rushing you, leaving you sit unattended, serving you food that had clearly sat under a heat lamp, and a poor pairing of wine with their food. The head waiter had the personality of a rock. (We had already eaten at some fine restaurants in the Loire Valley and Paris, so we're not comparing to American restaurants.)

They were very busy that night with a banquet or something in another larger room, and the main dining room suffered. Discussions with the hotel staff at which we stayed indicated that this had become increasingly noted by patrons referred to the Inn. It also appears they are falling victim to what I call the "American" approach of substituting quantity for quality to satisfy customers. (I am an American by the way.)

We will never go back and are spreading the word that they Inn, which is pricey, is "passé". Save your Euros (200 +) for a better place.
