Before I arrived, I had anticipated that The White House would be a conventional B&B, but in actual fact it is more truly a small hotel, as the owners do not live on the premises and it has rather more bedrooms than most B&Bs.
Skagway is a small town and the hotel is only a short distance from the main street and the WPYR rail station. A local shuttle is available for the airport and the ferry – the hotel provides full details when confirming your booking. Skagway can get very busy when the cruise liners are in dock, but the hotel is sufficiently far from the crowds to remain tranquil, while retaining its accessibility for the town’s attractions.
The reception is not manned, but the staff are available via a simple call from the phone on the front desk and they respond very quickly.
The building is an impressive residence, originally built in 1902, which has been sympathetically modernised, retaining many of the original features. It has about 9 bedrooms and is scrupulously clean, very well maintained and very tastefully decorated. Many of the objects – curtains, quilts, etc. – are hand-made.
Tea/coffee making facilities are available round the clock, as is a regularly replenished jar of home-made cookies. In fact, the staff must spend most of their days baking, as there are also fresh muffins for breakfast and other cakes/breads available later in the day.
The young ladies who run the house are very welcoming and helpful, proactively organising things to improve your stay, and we cannot speak too highly of them.
Good points. Great ambience. Thoughtful and considerate management. Convenient position. Good value.
Bad points. Can’t think of any.
Would I stay here again? Definitely. We left feeling “Wow, that was really good".
