Reviewed 17 August 2014

Before I arrived, I had anticipated that The White House would be a conventional B&B, but in actual fact it is more truly a small hotel, as the owners do not live on the premises and it has rather more bedrooms than most B&Bs.
Skagway is a small town and the hotel is only a short distance from the main street and the WPYR rail station. A local shuttle is available for the airport and the ferry – the hotel provides full details when confirming your booking. Skagway can get very busy when the cruise liners are in dock, but the hotel is sufficiently far from the crowds to remain tranquil, while retaining its accessibility for the town’s attractions.
The reception is not manned, but the staff are available via a simple call from the phone on the front desk and they respond very quickly.
The building is an impressive residence, originally built in 1902, which has been sympathetically modernised, retaining many of the original features. It has about 9 bedrooms and is scrupulously clean, very well maintained and very tastefully decorated. Many of the objects – curtains, quilts, etc. – are hand-made.
Tea/coffee making facilities are available round the clock, as is a regularly replenished jar of home-made cookies. In fact, the staff must spend most of their days baking, as there are also fresh muffins for breakfast and other cakes/breads available later in the day.
The young ladies who run the house are very welcoming and helpful, proactively organising things to improve your stay, and we cannot speak too highly of them.
Good points. Great ambience. Thoughtful and considerate management. Convenient position. Good value.
Bad points. Can’t think of any.
Would I stay here again? Definitely. We left feeling “Wow, that was really good".

“Too much of a good thing can be wonderful!” ― Mae West. Thank you for your detailed and well defined review of our place. The ladies running the place in my absence are very thoughtful and detail minded and we are very lucky to have them working with us. We do live on site, in the refurbished army barracks, right out the back door. We live in the house in the winter, but rent out all the rooms in the summer. And you are right, it is more like a small hotel, but because it was our home folks tended to call it a B&B, so after a couple years, we acquiesced. Thanks again for your kind words. Safe travels.

My wife and I came in on the Alaskan Ferry System to spend two nights and three days. What a treat the White House B&B turned out to be for us. A 1908 house with real character and great people running the B&B. Our room was on the second floor and very very quiet as well as clean and furnished well. The beds had a small teddy bear on the pillow and just made it seem so much like a home.

Kate was our hostess and was so kind, helpful and with a smile at all times. We had a 300PM ferry departure and they were happy to keep our bags after the 1100AM checkout until we needed to go to Ferry terminal. Kate was just so good to every visitor and made the stay extra special.

Also the local transit system was ideal and very timely. We purchased a $5 a day pass and were picked up at Ferry terminal and dropped at the White House front door. Then we could also ride as many times as we wanted all day until 900 PM. The White House is an easy walk to the downtown area and we did that as well during our stay.

We would stay at the White House B&B again as well as recommend it to anyone staying in Skagway AK.

This was just a really great place to stay in Skagway! The building was restored in 1990, after the 1977 fire had caused considerable damage. They were able to bring it back to it's earlier luster. The rooms each have private baths and have nice touches like handmade quilts and wall hangings. Breakfast was fun, we met other patrons from around the country and enjoyed the dining room. There are always chocolate chip cookies in the duck and hot water for tea. The young ladies that were working were very helpful. They offered for us to come back later and enjoy some cookies and tea in the living room until our ferry departure. Stay here in Skagway!

We had a very comfortable two nights here. We had room 101 on the ground floor which was huge. It is within easy walking distance of the centre of Skagway. The town is lovely when there are no cruise ships in! The breakfasts were OK and the homemade muffins excellent. It was a shame that there was no fresh fruit, only tinned.

Thank you for your comments. Glad you enjoyed your stay. We do actually serve fresh fruit as well as canned - apples or oranges. Sorry you missed them. Hope you enjoyed your time in Alaska, I understand there are a number of similarities to NZ. Safe travels.

We recently stayed at this historic looking B and B while touring around the Yukon and Alaska. The room was comfortable as was the bed. We were travelling with a small child and when we arrived the play pen was set up in our room which was as added bonus. The hosts were pleasant and friendly. The breakfast was "ok" typical continental breakfast with toast, fruit and hard boiled eggs. If we ever return to Skagway we would also stay again. It was an overall pleasant experience.

Stayed here twice now. A little pricier than other options but well worth the extra $'s. Clean, tastefully decorated, homey rooms. Simple, fresh items for breakfast. Friendly hosts and pretty much anywhere you want to go is within walking distance. Highly recommend this B & B.

Thank you for the kind endorsement and thanks for coming back to us again. We are doing our best to hold rates down. We raised them this year for the first time in five years. We hope that the amenities we offer at no additional charge, such as wireless Internet, Continental breakfast buffet and the ever popular cookie jar help to make our pricing worthwhile.

This renovated B&B decorated with antiques, a little off the beaten path, but the shuttle service will provide inexpensive transportation if you figure it out. It's a long walk from the ferry! In an otherwise tacky, touristy town, this is a calm retreat. You'll be greeted with fresh cookies in the cookie jar each afternoon. Lovely quilts adorn the wall. There's no elevator, so be prepared to carry your luggage up to the second floor. Breakfast is continental with a good selection. They had a room with two beds, making it a suitable choice for friends traveling together.

Thank you for taking the time to share your visit here on Trip Advisor. There are lots of gems in our touristy lil' town, and we are grateful you counted us to be one of them. For those traveling without their own transportation, we try to mention during the booking process and again in the confirmation that there is a shuttle available from 7am to 9pm, for a small fee, but with so many details in so many places, sometimes it gets lost on travelers ... so I had to take advantage an mention it here too. Their phone number is 907-983-2743 if anyone has questions about transportation. Safe travels all... Jan
