Pros: The shuttle portion was alright

Cons: Every aspect of the train ride, very very boring

Recommend?: No

Tips: Bring a snack if possible. There isn’t much time to stock up before you get on the train and the options in the little shop are limited and over priced. If you’re from a warm climate and not used to cold, bundle up. They won’t turn on the heat, even if you ask.

We found this trip very boring and not all that scenic. There were a few decent photo ops (very few) but overall, not worth the hours on a veeeerrrrryyyyyy slow moving train. The lunch stop was also way too long, as we (personally) didn’t find the things they offered to do all that interesting. We are more the type of people that enjoying doing things, than just putting around in a train; however, after reading so much about the absolutely amazing scenery, we decided it was worth it. We were wrong. We saw much more impressive scenery from the balcony of our cruise cabin.

I found the shuttle ride up far more enjoyable than the train ride down. I liked being able to stop the various signs (Welcome to the Yukon, etc) and getting some historical facts/stories. Plus at least the shuttle was warm!

We visited Skagway, AK in August and chartered Chilkoot Charters and Tours to take us into the Yukon. This turned out to be a pleasant and informative mid-sized tour with plenty of photo opportunities along the way. Our tour guide, James, definitely added a special touch to the tour, making it one to remember. James is a great storyteller. The whole way up into the Yukon he took us back in time and told the story of the individuals who took part in the gold rush, and painted such a vivid picture of what happened that we could practically see it happening right before our eyes. He has a way of captivating the audience, and your ears will be glued to every word of the story. You'll never be able to learn about or experience the history, the struggles and triumph of the people during that time from any movie or book like you will enlisting in this tour. Even though we don't have children, we still were lost in that nostalgic feeling, anxiously awaiting every word of the stories he told. If you have children especially, I strongly reccomend this tour, but James' tour is still one for all ages. There is an option to take the train back for more scenic opportunities, however, we chose not to because of cost and the fog came in and limited visibility. This tour is a must for any group or couple, the scenery is beautiful beyond words, everywhere is picture perfect, and it makes an unforgettable experience.

We booked the Yukon Rail & Bus Excursion With 15-Minute Dogcart Ride through Chilkoot Charters ahead of our stop there.

When we made our reservation, there was a small issue that arose. Kathy, one of the co-owners, immediately contacted us at home to let us know they were on top of it and resolved it in short order.

We were met at the dock @ 7:30 by our tour guide and driven over to the train. Chilkoot had the last two trains of the car reserved for them.

Once the train started, we could go stand on the platform outside. We stayed out for almost the entire 1½ hour ride. It did get wet and cold, but it was so worth it. The scenery was spectacular.

Once we got to Fraser, BC, we showed our passports to Canadian Immigration and then boarded a small tour bus and proceeded to the Yukon. Our tour guide, James, provided great information about the area and stopped at many places along the way for pictures.

We proceeded to Caribou Crossing where a barbeque lunch was provided and an opportunity to play with the sled-dog puppies is also offered. We had booked a 15 minute dog-cart ride as part of our excursion as well, and that was amazing. We highly recommend it!

After lunch, we boarded the bus and headed back toward Skagway. We stopped at Emerald Lake (amazing!) and then into the town of Carcross which is very quant and picturesque. We really enjoyed wandering through town and getting pictures.

The tour ended back in Skagway where we were dropped off in town (at our request) and explored for a bit.

Chilkoot did a great job and we recommend them.

The White Pass and Yukon Rail Excursion was well worth the price. We (my wife and myself) were warmly greeted at the ship dock about 1/2 hour before our scheduled departure time by our driver/guide Terrell. He was gracious and courteous in checking our documents and asked our patience while we awaited others on the tour (18 in all). We began with a brief tour of Skagway then continued up the mountain to some very scenic locations. Besides being very entertaining with his stories, he was also very informative regarding history and folklore. We were given sufficient time at the stops to get pictures and take in the majesty of the landscape. The clouds and rain did not make the trip any less exciting. Terrell did an excellent job of getting pictures of us at the more scenic locations using my camera. This was great because I'm usually not in my own vacation pictures. Lunch was simple but more than delicious. We were dropped off at Fraser to board the train for our return to Skagway and things could not have gone more smoothly. The train ride is a review unto itself, but as we rounded a turn early in the trip, just above us on the roadway was Terrell, waving good-bye to his previous group of travellers. Cruisers - book directly through Chilkoot Charters and save some cash! They are very mindful of cruise timetables and make certain you are back in plenty of time. We actually had time to walk into Skagway to do some shopping and still made it back on board for the early dinner seating. It was a truly memorable day!

We booke d with Chilkook Tours for serveral reasons. We wanted to use a local company, promised several stops for photos (unlike the train), their tour includes Emerald Lake (gorgeous beyond words) & they were even able to accommodate my numerour food allergies at lunch! Our driver Bruce was at the cruise pier (I did need to ask other excursion folks where to find them, but no problem) we had him all to ourselves until Fraser (where the train drops off the other folks). He was awesome! He narrated the trip with many stops for pictures and answered all our questions. The many highlights were Emerald Lake, seeing the husky puppies, and Bruce even pulling over to let us snap pictures of a mama black bear and her 3 adorable cubs playing on rocks and running up a tree. Phenomenal tour, and even Kathy who arranges the tour will answer ALL of your questions immediately. Their personal attention made all the difference!
