Probably better than the Seattle Art Museum. Has a good range of art, and a small cafe.
A bit of a walk uphill to get there, but would take you 15mins.
The Frye is a gem tucked away above downtown. The original collection is middling art, of the 19th century and collected by the
namesakes. The special exhibits are usually very interesting, it has a small restaurant, and concerts are given there on occasion.
Beautiful salon room with oil paintings. The temporary, video exhibits were really weird and one was very disturbing. Beautiful building.
This is a lovely smaller museum that has a solid permanent collection and quite interesting and ambitious rotating exhibits. It is not crowded which I love- sometimes I just hate being in museums that are just jam packed with people and noisy kids. The Frye is a respite from that scene. They also have a lovely café and like I said above, free admission and parking. That is hard to beat. We got to see the painting 'Sin' by Franz Stuck which was a real treat!
The Frye Art Museum is an interesting place in downtown Seattle, filled with interesting pieces from various times and various parts of the world. There are rotating exhibits, as well as a permanent collection, located in this small gallery. I enjoyed studying the works of the Danish master Hammershøi during the special exhibit dedicated to him. One permanent room is particularly interesting, as it's laid out in a way I've never seen in a gallery before, with tens of paintings stacked very close to each other on the wall, with no explanations provided beside them. These are instead provided in a book near the entrance to the room. However, this layout was one I found to be very original and is something I will remember about Frye.
There is a good café at the gallery, in which I enjoyed lunch. I had a tasty grilled cheese sandwich and soup, with good prices and good service. Frye is a highly recommended gallery for anyone who's in the area.
The Frye is an unusual museum, and worth visiting depending on what traveling exhibition is on view. We were lucky to visit the Frye during the Vilhelm Hammershøi show, a rare opportunity to see Denmark's celebrated 19th century artist. The permanent collection of the museum, however, is strange, so make sure there is something else on view before you go.
