“Enjoyed our second visit”
Reviewed 21 April 2017 for a stay in April 2017

We stayed here again (previously in 2015) for the Epic Enduro. A lovely cottage and ideal for 4-person family. New bathroom and staircase to mezzanine bedroom are a great improvement. Lovely views, quiet village but reasonably easy access to Olargues by bike (about 4km along the converted railway track) for shops (brilliant butcher and bakers). Beautiful views across the valley, nice walks just up the back though Les Hortes. This is definitely the first place we try booking when going to Olargues area! May not be totally suitable for infirm or very young kids as there are quite a lot of steps! And parking is 100m down the road.

“Lovely quirky house with secluded terraces”
Reviewed 17 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

La Bergerie is a very comfortable house with great colourful décor and interesting touches. The upstairs covered terrace is a great place to sit both daytime and evenings and there are a few lovely and secluded outdoor areas for sitting too. The house is on the outskirts of a small hamlet in a quiet area off the Jaur river valley, and about 4 km from the beautiful medieval small village of Olargues. So it's a great place for anyone who wants a rural setting within driving distance to great scenery, a few good eateries and lovely walks; and the owners went out of their way to provide detailed info on local facilities and directions to get to the house.

The house is quirky in some ways: the downstairs bedroom is quite a low and vaulted, but at the same time spacious, and the twin beds make a really big and comfortable double. The room is also quite cool at night, which is welcome. The second bedroom is on a mezzanine reached by a short ladder, so only viable for very fit people who don't need to grope their way down to the loo at night! The main stairs is a spiral one, so again a certain level of fitness is recommended. The bathroom with walk-in shower is lovely, the kitchen and comfortable sitting-room ditto and there's a great big table for dining in the covered terrace room. The views of mountains and valley from that open window are good but would be better if the big conifer on the edge of the property was trimmed. It seems that Languedoc is prone to occasional very strong winds (and we had them a few evenings) so the screen of trees is clearly essential and sitting indoors at an open window is a great choice to have - but the best views will be lost if the trees grow much bigger.

The house also has two or three lovely outdoor terraces. The lower terrace at the front would suit people who want to sunbathe (so not for us) as it's sunny most of the day but rather closed in by the trees. The upper terrace is delightful, with dappled shade from the fig tree and glimpses of further views; and there a few other lovely spots at the back to sit and read or just gaze and listen to the peace and quiet.

A car is essential for La Bergerie - we walked to Olargues and back along the Voie Verte (a lovely conversion of an old railway into a cycle and walking path) but it took almost an hour so not very practical for shopping or returning from a restaurant. Olargues itself is a beautiful, historic and atmospheric large village, though it could do with just two or three more cafés and restaurants; and in the other direction, La Trivalle has a friendly and lively bar which is good for people-watching and also serves food on weekend evenings (and all evenings in summer). The Gorges d'Héric are near La Trivalle and provide a fantastic day out, with drama and beauty all the way up the gorge, a great café at the top and opportunities for swimming in idyllic rock pools on the way back down. Roquebrun is another great day out, both for the dramatic town draped on a steep hillside, the lovely swimming on the river, the gardens (which we didn't get to visit but look very enticing) and interesting walks nearby.

Les Fleurs d'Olargues restaurant is hugely recommended, a great treat - and do avoid Auberge du Chat Noir unless it improves substantially as we'd a terrible meal there; and the bar in La Trivalle is also recommended as is the Funamble bar (and probably very good plats du jour) in Olargues, v good for people-watching too.

Les Horts is also within an hour to an hour and a half's drive from Béziers, from the Canal du Midi and from the coast, so plenty to do and to visit, plus there are very pleasant walks nearby - and there's always the appeal of La Bergerie's upper terrace, picking a few figs, reading a few chapters and soaking up the Mediterranean heat!

“Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting”
Reviewed 14 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Great little getaway, we stayed there for the Shimano Epic Enduro, its a few mins cycle up the hill from the main "piste cyclable" which takes you into Olargues or Mons -- either way its only a few minutes cycle. Our 2 kids 9 and 12 really enjoyed the area and staying at La Bergerie. For us it was ideal location, quite a few steps though so good exercise!

We were made to feel very welcome – lights on, all opened up ready when we arrived late in the evening. Fully-equipped. It was a very relaxing place to stay, with stunning views, and not far from the converted railway line, so easy cycling to local sights.
