“Convenient location and friendly service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2012

I stayed here with my family for a night. We chose this hotel for its downtown location (though Anchorage is a pretty quiet place and you have to change your perception of what downtown looks like). The other hotel with a similar location was the Hilton, and suffice to say, this hotel was slightly cheaper and offers free wifi.

The hotel is small and likewise offers a homely atmosphere. The main door is locked at night (just like a good old house). The staff who runs the cafe also runs the reception desk. There is no airconditioning since the weather is cold enough at night to provide airconditioning.

The rooms were a little small for my liking, probably because of the age of the hotel, but we didn't have too many problems there. Continental breakfast is free and offers a decent spread.

One not-so-nice thing about our stay was that our room faced the road, so at night some rowdy young men disrupted our sleep slightly.

Overall, it is a little pricey considering we stayed during the peak summer period, but it makes a good one or two night stayover location.

After looking at the hotel website, you really want to like the Historic Anchorage Hotel, but staying there is a mixed blessing. On the one hand a renovated historic three-story building in the middle of downtown Anchorage is very appealing; however, expectations aren’t fulfilled. I stayed for three nights on a business trip with long days that required obtaining quality sleep. Unfortunately, this was difficult at the Anchorage Hotel.

PLUSES:
1) Central location—good access to several restaurants within a few blocks. My favorite: Sack’s Café. The coastal trail, which goes for 11+ miles, starts about four or five short blocks from the hotel and provides stunning views of wetlands and shoreline, perfect for fabulous walking, running, and cycling!
2) Friendly and helpful staff who really try to please.
3) Room 303 (top floor) is a very large room with two queen-beds and a separate sitting area featuring a large sofa and armchair facing a 42” flat screen TV. Furnishings have a "historic," traditional feel. Several windows open to the street in front of the hotel.
4) Complimentary internet access (unfortunately frequently slow with occasional connection issues).
5) A modest continental breakfast: make-your-own waffles, cereals, plain yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, breads and bagels.

MINUSES:
1) Noise: In my case this was mostly street noise. Others in my business group who stayed on a lower floor could hear people walking around on the upper floor.
2) No air conditioning. The hotel interior was quite warm even with moderate sunny weather in Anchorage. Opening the windows and turning on the fan provided in the room was the only way to relieve this, but this aggravated the street noise problem. At other times of the year, of course, this is unlikely to be a problem.
3) For the immense size of the room, the bathroom was minuscule. No space to put personal toiletries. The tiny sink made it difficult to shave or simply wash one's face!
4) A small fitness room is located on the second floor with one treadmill and elliptical machine. Neither worked well, but in particular the elliptical jerked and made a grinding/clunking sound.
5) The nice breakfast room adjoining the lobby looks like a bar, which it may have been perhaps in a previous incarnation. Currently, it doesn’t appear to be used for anything in the evening, which is a missed opportunity since a glass of wine or beer would be delightful in that setting.

The Anchorage Hotel in my opinion is not well suited for business purposes or a longer stay of a couple of days or more. A large bed and breakfast may be a better categorization than a full service or even a boutique hotel. There are better options in central Anchorage.

My wife and I spent a get away night here and couldn't have been happier. The staff was wonderful, the rooms nice and clean, and we loved the historic charm. It is in a great location walking distance from many shops and restaurants. They sent us both a conformation and thank you emails. We stayed in room 201 ( which several reviews have said is the noisest room) on a Saturday night so the club across the street was in full swing till about 3 am. We didn't mind since we are a bit of night owls but if sleep is your main objective and you aren't use to a fair bit of city noise I would ask for a room other then 201. All in all we loved this hotel and would say we have found our Anchorage get away spot.

We stayed here one night and were very impressed. The staff was very helpful. I asked for early check in and they allowed me to check in hours early. They were extremely nice and were able to answer any questions I had. The hotel is an old building but the rooms were updated with high quality finishings. The location was convient, with resturants and shops right outside the door. We took the train ealy the next morning and were easily able to walk to the train station despite the rain. Wonderful stay!

We stayed at this hotel in mid-July and were very pleased. The location is excellent, right in the center of town. Others have mentioned noise issues, but we were there on a weekend and did not have any problem. The hotel had all the amenities that you could want and the staff was very attentive. The rooms may be a little small, but it is an historic hotel. We are planning on returning to Anchorage and will definitely try to stay here first. If you are in town on a Saturday during the summer check out the market that is only a block away from the hotel. It is a great place for souvenirs, crafts and unusual foods.

We stayed at the Historic Anchorage Hotel three seperate nights during our trip to Alaska. It was extremely convienent to the train depot. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is also right downtown so good restaurants are a short walk away. The complimentary breakfast was nice. All in all a good value.

Perfect location in the center of downtown. Within walking distance to everything. Room was larger than expected and bed was very comfortable. Room very clean and nicely decorated. Staff very frieindly, responsive and knowledgeable about local eateries and activies. We didn't know continental breakfast was included...it was simple but very nice. We would highly recommend staying here with all it's charm and warmth over a large chain hotel.
