“Very "Quaint" Hotel”
Reviewed 6 March 2008

My husband discovered this hotel on the internet and thought that it sounded like just the place that we needed for our stay in Anchorage. We were there celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary for a few days and then on to Denali and then returning back to Anchorage for a one night's stay before our flight home. I can't say enough about the staff at the hotel. They were so very helpful and nice in accommodating our needs due to our luggage not arriving for 3 days and also making our dinner celebration reservations very memorable. The hotel was very clean and very centrally located for all of our needs. The weekend market is just steps away and the train depot is very nearby. You can walk to so many locations which makes it alot easier due to difficult car parking situations. The only negatives that I found are the rooms are not air conditioned but there is a fan and I would recommend that you request a room away from the main street due to being very noisy all hours of the day and night. The breakfast included things like yogurt, fruit, cereal to homemade waffles. Great coffee! We highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a small hometown atmosphere as opposed to a larger accommodation.

The hotel is quaint. Old and historic (as the name says) but renovated quite nicely. Great location downtown. Right on the corner of 4th Street, very close to many of the bars and clubs in the party district. Our room was very clean. Bed was firm and not uncomfortable. The staff was very friendly and very helpful. The free breakfast was nice, with cereals, fruits, yogurts and really cool make-your-own waffle machines! Although the coffee was Seattle's Best, we didn't care for any of the roasts that were available. The free wi-fi was excruciatingly slow during our entire visit, making it impossible to send or receive email from our laptops (both Mac and Windows). Room with a view means room facing the street, which can be problematic and loud on weekends when the nearby bars empty out late at night. While we found a few problems with our experience there, they were nothing that wouldn't keep us from coming back. Next time, we're asking for a room in the back of the hotel, away from the street.

  • Liked — Excellent room for what we paid!
  • Disliked — painfully slow wi-fi made working away from home impossible at the hotel.

We were very impressed with this "boutique" hotel! The staff was wonderfully helpful and the location was perfect to see lots of downtown Anchorage. Everything was very clean and we loved the breakfast which was served in the coffee shop attached to the hotel! Even got to make our own waffles!

We stayed at the hotel for two nights in early August. The room was spacious and clean. The employees were very friendly, courteous and helpful. The complimentary breakfast was perfect for our family of four. Because we were in Anchorage during particularly warm weather, our room was hot during the day. Thank heavens for the fan. We had to leave the windows open at night to help cool the room down. Unfortunately, the Hilton Hotel bar entrance and, more importantly, exit were right next door. We heard traffic and people until about midnight. From 2 to 3 am we heard very loud bar patrons lesiurely leaving the area. I wish we had heeded another writers comment regarding rooms away from the main street. All in all, we would stay here again--just in a room without a view.

Stayed at the Anchorage Hotel on April 18-19 after abandoning our reservation at the Sherton due to poor service. While this property isn't going to win any awards for decor or amenities, we found our room both cozy and clean and the hotel ideally located. Also enjoyed the historic photographs hung throughout the hotel. We had a corner room which, while bright and breezy during the day, was also fairly loud at night due to the foot traffic (often of the inebriated variety) on the street two floors below. We had a standard room with a comfortable king bed and paid just $79/night -- a great value considering the Sheraton reservation we'd canceled was $149/night. We were at the farthest end of the hotel from the lobby so while it offered free wireless, our connection was spotty at best although we were able to get online thanks to the wi-fi offered by the restaurant across the street. We stayed two nights and interacted with quite a few of the staff (albeit briefly) -- everyone was perfectly pleasant including the maid service. Would definitely return.

Just got back from a four-night stay at the Historic Anchorage Hotel and am surprised that the hotel isn't ranked on the hotel listings. We found the room to be generous in size and the location was great - close to the train station, the Sunday market and near shopping and dining options. They have a continental breakfast each morning with make-your-own waffles, and other breakfast items (the only egg option was a hard-boiled one, but it was good!) I would recommend the hotel for any traveler.

I stayed here for 6 nights and was delighted with the hotel. I'm a journalist and travel a lot so it takes a lot to make me want to write a reveiw. For me, the Historic Anchorage Hotel deserves kudos. My room was nicely decorated and clean. The people at the front desk were awesome! Helpful as they could be. The free continental breakfast was solid - hot and cold cerals, yogurt, fresh fruit, bagels, waffles, etc. And the location is ideal for downtown Anchorage.
