“Cool hotel in a great location with a very nice staff”
Reviewed 15 August 2013 via mobile

Some of these reviews complain that the hotel is 'dated' or 'old'... The complainers shouldn't be surprised, it's in the name. I would stay there again and highly recommend this quirky, friendly, historic, clean hotel. The breakfast area is very cool, the old photos give a sense of time and place, and the rooms are big and clean. Sure it may be a little noisy outside... Its's downtown, so what do people expect?! Stay here when you come to Anchorage, you'll be glad you did if you like staying out of the boring, big chain hotels.

It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to stay is the oldest hotel in Anchorage. The hotel is very nicely renovated with all of the modern conveniences EXCEPT air conditioning. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room a bit small but comfortable. We were there during a bit of a warm spell. The room was warm but there was a fan, I had read other reviews so requested an off street room so street noise was not an issue. The hotel is in a great location. We could walk every where. We purchased a parking pass for a nearby lot from the front desk. The lot was convenient and much better than having search for street parking. This was overall a very positive experience. I would definitely recommend for a short stay.

Room Tip: Choose top floor, off street. There is an elevator.

We spent 2 nights here in early August. The room was comfortable, bathroom clean and spacious, but looked out over a painted bland brick walk with some sad forgotten pot plants on a shelf. Their wifi did not work, despite 3 requests at reception to reboot their server; we were on the second floor which the receptionist said was 'dodgy'. Didn't work for the 3 days we were there, unlike some extremely remote places elsewhere in Alaska! Breakfast included self serve waffles, good, and supermarket bread served still in its plastic bag, not good. Fairly poor breakfast options overall, sorry but they could do so much better. Summary, nice room, dreadful view, but worse, wifi and breakfast let it down.

Let's get the only negative out of the way first--there's lots of street noise and late night rowdiness to contend with. Since the hotel is not air conditioned, leaving the windows up in warm weather is a must. The hotel is located on one of the busiest corners of downtown Anchorage. We didn't discover the white noise machine in the room until too late. That would have helped. BUT otherwise, it's a wonderful hotel--beautifully renovated, nice complimentary breakast, well-appointed rooms, etc. The manager is very efficent and attentive. The property is not cheap but nothing in Anchorage is.

Room Tip: Ask about rooms on the back side that would help reduce (but not eliminate) the noise.

First, let me begin with the positives. The hotel staff is outstanding and very accommodating. I stayed for three nights and they knew my name. Despite some minor issues, they were very helpful. So I have no complaints about the staff.

The room, though not large, was comfortable. It was clean and nicely decorated and very bright. The location of the hotel is right downtown, just a couple of blocks from the train station and all the main city attractions. In addition the hotel offers and complete breakfast with cereal, juice, waffles, etc. one of the few hotels I've stayed at in Anchorage that has a breakfast. So all these are very positive selling points for this hotel.

But now for the main problem. The NOISE from the upper rooms and hall. The must literally be no soundproofing in the hotel. You could hear every voice and sound from the adjacent rooms and hall but especially from the upper floor. For two nights the noise from the room above me sounded like I was under a bowling alley. The thumping and pounding went on until well after 11:30 pm and began at 4:30 am. It wasn't just occasional but continuous for a couple of hours. In the middle of the night when they would get up and walk across the floor it was like someone pounding a hammer.

Also, in room Internet was sporadic at best and I only was able to use my I pad on one occasion for a couple of hours. But that was minor compared to the noise.

If you are staying there insist, and I mean insist, on a room on the third floor and if they can't accommodate look else where. For me, the noise spoiled what I would have considered a 4 or even a 5 star experience.

This historic hotel, situated across the street from the Egan Civic Center, has been renovated while still maintaining much of its historic character. It is necessarily noisy because of its busy location. The rooms facing the street have good views of downtown and the civic center, but the rooms in the rear are desirable for noise mitigation.

The staff, somewhat undermanned, are friendly and helpful. Some of the furniture in our room showed signs of wear. To our disappointment, the breakfast buffet was not ready as advertised on our day of departure, so we just made do with what was left over.

Room Tip: Select a room in the rear to mitigate street noise.

Great location. Friendly staff. I'd definitely stay here again. They even put some stuff in their dryer for us! Breakfast is provided in the dining room, which is filled with traditional Alaska items, including old pictures. It’s not cheap, but nothing in Alaska is cheap!
