“Cheap in the off-season”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

The direct booking off-season rates (with extra discount for AAA) are not much more than the best Priceline deal, and the facility is MUCH nicer than anything you get from Priceline. It's also the only hotel that's very convenient to University and Hospital events. On campus, it has much less traffic noise than most Anchorage hotels. Lots of families with kids. Nice pool/hottub layout (but no in suite tubs). Acceptable breakfast.

Booked this property based on TA reviews. Glad we did. The room was very comfortable, with a view of the frozen lake and dog walking trails (which provided quite the amusing past time).

Wi-fi and hard wire internet is free and easy to access--you need to sign in once a day, but it's quick. Local phone calls are free.

There isn't much closet space in the room, so if you are bringing a lot of clothes, beware. You've got maybe 18" of hanging space, and there's a drawer at the bottom of the cabinet, precluding hanging of slacks.

Interestingly, the towels had no odor to them before use, but toweling off after a shower produced a strong coffee aroma in the towel. That was a first. Maybe it was a subtle reminder to have a cup of joe.

Speaking of which, breakfast was also free. Waffles, fresh fruit, juices and coffee, eggs and a meat dish (sausage or turkey bacon), breads and pastries, cold cereal--and very attentive attendants who keep things clean and fresh. Enjoy breakfast next to the fireplace reading a free newspaper.

The indoor pool and hot tub were very busy with lots of kids. And some of our neighbors needed to find their quiet voice. But all in all, not a bad stay--especially with the all inclusive rates.

No complaints!

I stayed at the University Lake Springhill Suites for two weeks with an ill family member . I found the entire staff from the front desk to housekeeping provided excellent customer service. The rooms are clean and well planned out. There is a microwave and refrigerator in the room which helped cut down on our food expense as did the provided breakfast. Laundry facilities on site are convenient. The location next to the lake is peaceful away from traffic noise but the area is close to the hospitals.
Considering the circumstance of our stay, we were as comfortable as we could be and felt very supported by the helpful, friendly staff.

My wife and I spent three nights just to get away for a few days. The accomodations were very pleasant, and the staff was very friendly and professional. The price was a little high, but you have to remember that this is Alaska. Overall, it was a very pleasant getaway.

Located about 15 minutes from downtown Anchorage, this hotel is clean, comfortable and has spacious rooms. The hotel overlooks a small lake with mountain views. All the rooms are suites with a separate seating area with a sofa and desk. The rooms are very clean and bright, but just a bit to modern and cold looking for my tastes. Think Ikea style furniture with mint green colored carpet and lime green walls and drapes. The bathrooms are beautiful though, with a separate toilet and sink area, glass enclosed shower and sliding wood doors. My king bed was very comfortable, with clean, fresh smelling sheets, duvet and pillows. I slept great here!

As usual with most Marriott properties, the hotel staff were friendly and efficient. I didn't like the check-in desk area in the lobby, with its semi-circle design. Guests who were waiting didn't seem to know where the line started and it just looked unorganized and didn't flow well. The fireplace and fire pit on the patio were nice though. There's a small pantry in the lobby where you can buy snacks and drinks. The included continental breakfast was just average. Free WiFi worked fine and the airport shuttle leaves to the airport on the hour (I had to call the hotel to arrange a shuttle pick up at the airport though, about a 15 minute wait).

Overall an excellent value (I paid $89 a night in November) and I had a comfortable stay here.

We flew into Anchorage late and stayed here for the night before heading to Valdez the next morning. Very nice hotel. Clean & looked fairly new. The lake behind the hotel was very peaceful. The breakfast buffet was very good. Just wish we'd had a longer stay.

Stayed here for a couple of nights. I was requesting lake checkout to a male employee at the front desk, but he told me that I had only until 1pm to check out or I would be charged. So I said I was a Platinum member and could request a priority late checkout. This is what he said, "yes, we give you until 1pm because you are Platinum.".

First of all, he did not even know I was a Platinum member when I first requested the late checkout. So 1pm checkout had to be something offered to every guest. Secondly, that was not a late checkout, but more like a grace period. Thirdly, since he was going to charge me for a real late checkout, so late checkout was available and they just did not want to offer it to platinum guests on a complimentary basis.

One of the Marriott rewards elite benefits is "priority late checkout". But this property offers every guest 1 hour grace period, and does not offer anything different to elite members - there is neither late checout nor priority.

Hello –

I recently received a copy of your review and want to thank you for the feedback. Our goal is to provide great service, but we didn’t meet your expectations during your stay. Please accept my sincere apology.
You are absolutely right that one of the benefits of being a Platinum guest is the luxury of a late checkout, several hours after the standard checkout time.
Thanks again for letting us know about your experience, the hotel’s general manager is following up with the front desk staff to provide additional training and to review of the policy.
