“dated but good location”
Reviewed 24 August 2013

The rooms could use a renovation, especially the dated bathrooms, but it is clean, very well located and an excellent gym (separate facilities for men and women), but they do charge guests a fee. Hotel restaurants are good, and the concierge will try and steer you to them. Do not be afraid to eat out, as Anchorage has many good places.

Room Tip: high floor looking at the water

Dear verycritical,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate your review and sharing your opinion of our Hotel. It's very nice to see you enjoyed your stay and had the chance to visit and use the Athletic Club. We are constantly updating the Hotel to stay current without losing our identity. Our Concierge as well as all our staff are trained customer first. We find out what kind of dining experience you're looking for and proceed from there. There are great restaurants both inside and outside the Hotel and we recommend them all. Thank you for visiting our state and we look forward to seeing you again.

My husband and I were in Anchorage for (4) nights as apart of our honeymoon. The first part of our trip to Anchorage was spent at a hotel down the street from them because we were new to Alaska and weren't sure of the good places to stay as of yet. We were advised by that hotel's tour desk to go to The Hotel Captain Cook for help with tours and information in Anchorage - what an odd request! We had no problems walking down the street to speak with them, as we knew we were booked there for our last two nights in Alaska. Boy, were we glad we took the advice! Brian is the best Concierge we've ever worked with.....stayed in contact with us even though we were not staying at his hotel - YET - and made sure the excursions he booked for us were set and went well......what a great guy! When we finally did check in for our actual stay, the Concierge, Front Desk, Housekeeping, Bell Man and Restaurant Staff were five star - and their food at Fletcher's, The Cubby and The Crow's Nest was GREAT!! The beds are comfortable, very private, extremely well kept hotel and your stay is their #1 concern! It's a place where you know they appreciate return business and work hard to earn it. We will definately be back to Anchorage, and when we return, there is no place we will stay other than The Hotel Captain Cook!

Room Tip: We were on our honeymoon so we selected a Junior Suite. We were also on the last two nights of our...

Dear HappyGuest2013,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. Amazing review and we really appreciate the depth you left about our Hotel. Hearing that you had a less than desirable stay elsewhere in Anchorage and to be saved by Brian our Concierge was remarkable. He has been with the Hotel for a long time and his diligence and professionalism are always put on display with his true care in helping our guests. Seeing the rest of the staff and the Hotel was able to shine along side his leadership during your stay really makes us all happy and proud to be here. We'd love to see you return to Alaska some day. We promise there will always be smiling staff to welcome you home and take care of your every need. Cheers!

We stayed here one night at the beginning of our Backroads Trip, and found everything to be just perfect. Not as nice as Alyeska, but a nice, clean, well run option in Anchorage. My son used the work out facility ans was very pleased with it. Breakfast at the cafe downstairs was delicious.

Excellent choice in town. Walking distance to shopping, eateries, parks. Very well kept hotel and a great way to start any Alaska adventure. This hotel has historical meaning in the town as one of the first hotels built.

Dear eyedoc95,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. What an awesome review. The first Tower was built in 1965 one year after the massive earthquake that shook our great state. With hard work and a keen eye the Hickel Family built a landmark that has lasted almost 5 decades. We look forward to continuing to update, stay current, and provide great service. Thank you for mentioning it and we hope to see you soon.

Sincerely

I stay at the Captain Cook frequently and like the property.

Good location for my short stays in anchorage. Staff is receptive, restaurant (adjacent to lobby) is very good and the work out facility is very nice. Some rooms are somewhat noisy due to street traffic (Anchorage is a 24 hour city).

Location good for walking the Tony Knowles trail or shopping & market in downtown.

Room Tip: Ask for inside rooms in the towers and higher up are better. If, big IF, you are lucky and get a no...

Got into Anchorage at 1 AM and all the hotels were booked. We found a flea bags motel downtown for $149 and drove by it. There were bars and several drunk people wandering the streets. So we decided to stay at The Hotel Captain Cook that was considerably more expensive, it was double.
Well what a NICE surprise.
Out room had two king beds. Breakfast the next morning was excellent. Best breakfast, I have ever had (Reindeer sausage). My mother had corned beef hash w sweet potatoes and it was excellent. My son had sausage gravy over biscuits. He said it was the best he ever had.
Service was excellent; fast and waitress talked to everyone about Alaska activities.

Dear Betty F,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. I love the way your review turned out. I am glad you chose to stay with us over the other Hotel and that we were able to provide a really nice stay. Seeing how much you loved the breakfast makes me want to order some right now. Too bad its evening time and I'll have to wait until tomorrow. I'll let the Chefs know they're doing a great job and I'll pass this onto the wait staff that their conversations are well received. Thank you and we can't wait to see you again.

We had a comfortable, 2 night stay at the start of our honeymoon. We upgraded to the Concierge level and it was totally worth it! Free parking, access to fitness center/pool (normally $10), free happy hour (enough food to serve as a meal and 2 drinks per guest), and included breakfast. It seemed expensive at the start but we definitely got what we paid for!

Room Tip: Upgrade to the concierge level, well worth it.
