My wife and I spent the last night of our honeymoon here before heading home. The hotel was comfortable and I have no real complaints. It was a little dark in the hallways- reminded me of the Shining. I'd stay there again, but only at a competitive price.

Stayed: June 2013, travelled as a couple

Dear CEC337,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. The Shining??? That brings back memories of late nights, living room popcorn, and watching Jack put on a chilling performance.

The smiling staff, rich restaurant smells, and bustling beat of the downtown scene would guide me to a different description. Maybe Michael J Fox's "For Love or Money". The dreams and wonders of a young man in a big city hoping to make it with guest service being his number one priority.

Thank you again and we look forward to seeing you in the future and have a great summer!

Sincerely,
Hunter R. W. Edelen

I have stayed in the Captain Cook about 40 nights during the past five years. Every visit has been pleasant and enjoyable. Staff are always polite and helpful. Rooms are always clean and ready for check in several steps above the competition for amenities, interiors, pillows, etc. Recently, the Hotel has upgraded air conditioning in Tower Three.
The Crow's Nest on the top floor has the best views and meal service in the city. Whale's Tale and Fletcher's also offer a high level of cuisine and service.
The hotel is located close to most of downtown Anchorage sights, dining and attractions.
I really can't think of anything negative about the Captain Cook. Over the past 25 years, I have stayed in about ten other hotels in Anchorage but the Captain Cook remains my favorite.

Room Tip: Rooms facing east have a great mountain view with the sunrise.

Dear Carl B,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate your review and we're pleased to see you enjoyed your stay. Having stayed in so many properties you have extensive experience of Anchorage hospitality. Receiving the highest marks among them is rewarding to hear and thank you for your loyalty over the years. We promise to hold our staff to the highest standards, keep the Hotel in great condition, and welcome you back anytime.

p.s. Where did the sunshine go? Early summer was dynamite but now it seems the rain is taking over. Well I hope it helps keep the fires down.

Sincerely,

This hotel was booked as part of the on land portion of the Princess Cruise in Alaska. I called the hotel on Thursday to advise them that our flight would not arrive in Anchorage until 12:30am and we would be arriving at the hotel around 1:00am. When we arrived, they gave us our keys to the room. When we opened the door, we found the room not made up. We returned to the front desk. They said because we were arriving late, they allowed another guest to have late checkout and apparently had been too late to receive housekeeping. They did not have any staff on duty at that time that could clean the room, we refused to use a dirty room, and they were not sure they had another room available for us. After some insistence since it was now 1:30am, they did find another room, but said it was not part of the ones reserved for Princess--OH well! The next day, we had reserved a car which was supposed to be right through the hotel, but when we went to get the car, we were told we had to be picked up by the car company and taken to their office. It was 1.5 hours out of our only day in Anchorage. Also, before we left, we wanted to look our valuables in the room safe, but it did not work. We went to the front desk which then called maintenance. They said it would be a couple of hours. The desk then said we could leave our stuff in their safe, but it wouldn't fit. We then had to call security to have it locked in the hotel security safe--another hour wasted! Upon our return to the hotel after our day out sight-seeing, we went to retrieve our belongings from security. Unfortunately, there had been a shift change, and the guard that had taken our stuff, did not leave the next shift information on this. After a bunch of searching and paperwork, they found our stuff, but again, I stood in the lobby for 1.5 hours while trying to resolve the situation. There were no apologies issued for any of the matters--just the statement that these things happen. For supposedly being an upscale hotel, it was cut-rate service!!!!

Room Tip: If you are going to spend the money to be there, at least get a room facing the inlet so you have a view because the rest of the hotel is not worth the money spent.

Dear Susan C,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate you taking time to write a review and I apologize that you didn't enjoy your stay. I would like to address your concerns
at this time.

Whether a late checkout is granted to a guest or not, all rooms are cleaned in a timely fashion and we have staff around the clock to accommodate late arrivals. I wish the inlet view you were hoping to get was available because I believe we would have gotten off to a better start.

Our Concierge team understands how valuable each minute is for site seeing and exploring both locally and afar. They are trained to help find our guests a rental car company that best fits their needs and desired budget. I'd like to get some more info from you regarding this subject so if you have time I'll post my email below.

Room safes. Brand new, easy electronic punch code, but not huge. Wallets, small purses, passports, etc. are normally items that find a temporary home within their walls. Large items can be stored in a locked area with our bellman and easily retrievable. Storing items with Security can be retrieved very fast or have lengthy delays. This is because they are either free to help immediately or they are attending to a concern within the Hotel and their job is protect and keep our guests safe.

Our job as employees, and ambassador's to Alaska's doorways are to find any way possible to create a memorable stay for you. We will use this as training and look forward to improving in all areas.

We were lucky to be upgraded to the 17th floor and enjoyed the private lounge. Lovely hotel, great location and friendly service. We knew people in the standard rooms and they were also impressed with the size of the rooms.

Go to the top, 20th floor to the Crows Nest, nice restaurant and bar and view the city. Their first floor cafe is equally nice - try the sourdough pancakes! The rooms are clean and the services are really on the spot when you need them. There is a weekend market a short walk to 3rd and C Street.

Room Tip: Go high to get a good view of the city

Dear Jeannet1957,

Thank you for staying at The Hotel Captain Cook. We appreciate your great review and it's very nice to see you enjoyed your stay. I love the pancakes too. Soft, fluffy, and full of syrup! The weekend market is a blast with tons of local artistry on display, metallurgy enthusiasts, and street food for days. Have fun in Lake Havasu and if you're ever back we'd love to see you again.

Sincerely,
