This is an older hotel but came in under the the $200 per night mark which was what we were looking for. Definitely dated and rather noisy with the railroad across the street and a train (or two) that insisted on blowing their horns 6 or 7 times in succession twice through the night. Make sure that you book a room on the 3rd floor as the air conditioning is pumped in through a ceiling vent on the 2nd floor rooms making a noise like a shower running constantly (can't be switched off). Having said that, ear plugs work to block the noise, the beds were large and comfortable, rooms and bathroom spacious and they supply a microwave as well as fridge. One thing I would like to see would be a kettle to boil water for a cup of tea as the coffee makers don't do the job.
Staff are helpful, we had a glitch with a wrong booking but the staff sorted it with no dramas. there is a free shuttle to the airport and a great restaurant right next door.
I read a bunch of reviews on this hotel and was hesitant to stay after some of the negative comments but I am glad we did. We stayed 2 nights this month and had a very positive experience. Shuttle service from airport was convenient and driver was friendly. Check-in was smooth and staff were friendly as well. Room was adequate size for two adults and two teenagers, bathroom was clean, beds were comfortable, and curtains were dark enough to block out daylight at night! Used 10% off coupon for on-site restaurant (Slippery Salmon) at breakfast 1st day--server was pleasant, food was good, Everything is pricey in Alaska so the hotel offered discount coupon plus the rate we paid to stay for 2 nights was a good deal. Hotel is convenient to Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, Anchorage Museum, and anything else in downtown Anchorage. We walked everywhere with no problems. We felt safe at all times. Shuttle dropped us off at train station which is conveniently located as well. If you read the negative reviews--don't believe everything you read. Give this place a try. We will stay again if we ever visit Anchorage again.
GOOD: Downtown location within walking distance of most major attractions such as food, shopping and the railway. Our room was clean.
BAD: Amenities in the room were pretty dated, our king bed and pillows had definitely seen quite a few people. We were on the 3rd floor so it was quite hot up there. There was a AC unit, however it was very loud; no screen in the window either. Being so close to the railway meant we heard train horns all night. Guy at the front desk not very helpful as far as knowing what and where the major local attractions were (such as the Midnight Sun Brewery which is very popular).
