“Nice hotel but unreliable shuttle”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

Our stay here didn't start out on the right foot. I called for the shuttle when we arrived at the airport and was told it would be half an hour as the driver was picking up cruise people at the train depot. It never came, so I called again. This time they said another 15 minutes. Nothing. I called again and they said the driver was on his way. We waited an hour for the shuttle as all the other hotels had 3 or 4. The driver that picked us up said he didn't know anything as he had just started his shift. We were a bit angry to say the least when we arrived at the hotel, especially seeing that the train depot is practically across the street! Having said that, the young lady that had just started at the front desk was doing the very best she could considering she was alone and being pulled in all directions. Check-in was surprisingly quick considering, but it was now 10:30pm, 2 hours after we landed. We had hoped to get some dinner, but with no car, this proved exceedingly difficult. As far as the room, we were quite pleased - it was clean and comfortable, no noise - no issues at all. Breakfast in the morning was in a decent sized room and with a decent selection. However, of all things, they ran out of utensils and coffee cups and the person in charge was no where to be found. We asked the person at the front desk who seemed just as harried as the evening person. He went to look in several places for the cups and the person in charge but could find neither, so we left. Management needs to stop being so cheap (or whatever their excuse is) and hire more staff. It's ridiculous how hard everyone was working (and I never saw them lose their composure!). One other thing, although we walked to downtown, it is rather removed and quite an uphill walk. This was a very nice hotel for the price, as long as the location and unreliable shuttle service is not a concern. We rented a car the next day so we only used the shuttle once.

The hotel itself is adequate- nice comfy bed and sheets and a hot breakfast are highlights. Location is great for railroad, and shuttle (free) is needed to do sightseeing in downtown anchorage. There is not a whole lot directly in the vicinity of the hotel, but there is a paved trail along ships creek that is nice for a stroll.

Hotel offers shuttle service to airport, train depot, and you can catch a free shuttle to downtown right next door at the Ulu Knife Factory store.

Room was extremely comfortable, meaning large with 2 queens beds, micro wave, refrigerator, table and chairs. Staff was efficient and courteous letting us know that we could take their shuttle the next morning to the train station.

Breakfast consisted of the usual hotel breakfasts with cereals, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles, breads, juices, etc.

Ship Creek is located right out back of the hotel and there is a restaurant in that same area with a place that has fishing equipment you can rent.

Room Tip: Does not matter what room you stay in. Just be prepared to hear the trains! You are just across th...

This was our third stay on our Alaskan trips and we used it as a central base during our travels, staying here on three separate occasions over a ten-day stretch. Its proximity to the train station was of paramount importance on all of our trips. The walk along Ship Creek is always pleasant. The staff is always helpful and this trip we got caught in a situation where some financial business needed to be transacted during one of our stays. Their business center and helpful staff made the transactions go very smoothly. We like to walk and the weekend flea market and downtown is just up the hill. If you're not into walking, the shuttle is usually available to take you into downtown. We used the shuttle from Ted Stevens Airport to the hotel only and then walked to the train station for our trip north to Fairbanks.
Derek, the Kodiak bear, has always been there to greet us. You have to see him to believe him.

Room Tip: This is a typical Comfort Inn. A room on the creek side would be quieter than one on the front side...

During our recent trip to Alaska we stayed here and were so happy we did. To begin, the shuttle service was available even when we arrived after midnight and every other time we needed it (except one which I'll explain later). Our room was large and comfortable with two double beds and two comfortable arm chairs, a desk, TV, coffee maker and a very welcome free WIFI. The bathroom was large and the room very clean.
Breakfast was included and started at 5:00 am, perfect for people who had early tours. I have to say that the scrambled eggs were the best I have ever had at a buffet breakfast, tasty and fluffy. Sausage, waffles, pastries, yogurt, juice, coffee and items I probably forgot were included.
We were traveling on a land tour and I was later going out on a cruise so I had a large suitcase of cruise wear. The hotel stored it free for me so I wouldn't have to lug it around.
The staff was attentive, helpful and uniformly friendly including but not limited too Ron and Aldo.
The location was perfect for us as we were heading out on Alaskan Railroad adventure and the station was a short walk away. I personally love the sound of a train whistle but for someone who doesn't this is probably not the place for you.
When we returned from our adventure we got off the train with a party of 35 traveling together and staying at the property. The shuttle was obviously engaged moving everyone and their luggage so we walked to the hotel toting our bags. Not a big deal.
Ship Creek runs behind the property and we enjoyed watching the salmon fishing. When we wanted to go downtown we used the ULU Factory complementary shuttle just a few feet away that took us to the Anchorage Visitors Center. Would positively stay here if we return to Anchorage.

We stayed here three different times, on our two week vacation in Alaska. They picked us up at the airport, and the next day dropped us off at the car rental agency, which was great. This hotel is very busy with the train station being just down the street. They only had two clerks working the desk and the breakfast area. It was very hard for them to keep up with all the needs especially in the breakfast area.
I really like the cookies they put out every night. When we stayed there two years ago they also served milk with the cookies. I think the service has gone down since our first stay. The rooms were typical rooms and they were clean.

Dear MnTreker,

Thank you for your comments on Trip Advisor! I do agree that hotels in the Anchorage during summer are a bit on the pricey side but we are very happy to know that you enjoyed your stay with us. We hope to see you again in the future and hope that you have a great rest of your summer!
