We stopped by on a Saturday for a ride with my mom, wife, and son (age 10).

All in all a pretty good, inexpensive way to beat in a couple hours. We walked around the 4-5 engines they had and poked our head in the "mail car". There is a small engine that takes you out to the "boneyard" area with "projects" waiting to be restored.

The trainride itself was about 45 minutes long and my son really enjoyed it. Probably not so much if he was a few years older.

All in all a good diversion if you like trains and hearing train stories.

Discovered this by accident. The train trip is well worth $10 and there is more action on this trip than you get on the Williams train. The actors are very good and the shoot out is unbelievable. I definitely reccommend this attraction

The Nevada State Railroad Museum's train in Boulder City is The Neveada Southern Railway and runs a diesel hauled service from Boulder City which is close to Hoover Dam. If you see the dam you pass the railway if coming from Las Vegas. The line originally was put down to serve the construction of Hoover Dam.
At Boulder City station there are exhibits of old steam & diesel locomotives and the excursion train runs most of the year on Saturdays & Sundays. Departure times for 2013 are 10, 11:30, 1 & 2:30. Adult prices are $10 for the return ride but you cannot get off the train except at Boulder City. Round trip is 45 minutes.
They even have a day out with Thomas weekend during April 2013.

I have been unable to get there on a weekend when the trains are operating however, you can get a good look at the locomotives in the Museum from the platform.

One of the less publicized programs at the Museum is their Engineer for an Hour opportunity. It provides the chance to actually operate a large locomotive. A volunteer engineer and brakeman were with us (my wife and I) and were absolutely terrific in explaining controls, procedures, etc. They stressed the time was ours to use so we both took turns operating the locomotive in forward and reverse, dealing with throttle, brakes, and of course the bells and whistles!

Truly a memorable time.
