La Collegiale Notre Dame des Anges
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 12 July 2014

This church is beautiful. Based on Tripadvisor reviews, we headed straight here after parking in L'Isle sur Sorgue. The church was set up for a local wedding and the mix of ancient and modern was beautiful.

There's no fee to enter, but a contribution to keep this gorgeous church intact is well worth it.

While having a pleasant stroll in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, we came across a rather plain looking, but very old church on the main square. We decided to take a peek - opening the door and looking inside was a huge surprise! This Notre-Dame from the 1200's still had some of the original frescos. Other parts had been repaired and it was soooooooooo fancy! Gold leaf statues, bright dark blues with gold, multicolor paintings, and many chapels off of the main area all decorated with different and unbelievable detail. We both thought this church was a much better place to see that the famous Pope's Palace in Avignon.

The Notre Dame des Anges is undergoing some much needed exterior renovation in the summer of 2014 but don't just sit at Café de France and look at the outside. The church has somewhat limited opening hours but it is worth organising yourself to look inside. I've been in a lot of European churches but the decoration here is distinctive. We are not even faintly religious but the Lyn part of the MosLyn team wants to come to a Christmas service. I can feel something freezing off just thinking about it.

It is the most beautiful intimate church in Provence. They even have recorded music to intensify your experience of the most beautiful gilded wood wall of your lifetime. Most see in the morning often not open in the afternoon. The reason to come to L'Isle Sur La Sorgue!
