“Absolutely excellent!”
Reviewed 6 March 2014

As a family of four we stayed at these apartments during a one week skiing holiday. We have stayed several times in MGM-built properties with CGH and knew to expect the usual high standard. We were not disappointed. Prior to arrival, i had read other reviews and asked for an apartment near the ski lift and with a view of the slopes and my requests were kindly accommodated. We had a very spacious apartment in Block A and we literally came out of the locker room, walked across the path, before skiing a few metres down to the chair lift. This was absolutely superb. I am a cautious skiier, with only basic skills but the 8km Foret run from the top of the chair lift was absolutely perfect for me while my husband and sons skied extensively. The apartments are a few minutes walk up the hill from the village but there is a regular free bus service around the villages during the day. The villages themselves are compact with a small number of restaurants. We found all the staff extremely helpful and pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely return to this resort and to these apartments.

This is the best ski apartment we have had, used as we are to tiny self catering apartments with basic furniture. The decor was charming chalet style wood and check curtains etc, and the apartment was spacious. We had chosen a two-bed one for the four of us. There was plenty of cupboard space, and two bathrooms and a separate toilet. All spotlessly clean. The kitchen was very well equipped with lots of cooking pots, plates and cutlery, not always the case in holiday apartments. The balcony was enormous (not that we had the weather to sit out). TV French and German channels only apart from BBC world service.
The reception area was very impressive but it's true that the fires were rarely lit - we did see them lit twice and they were lovely. the main problem is that the whole reception building closes at 8, so you need to finish with the pool, snooker table etc by then. We used the pool area a lot and it was lovely- the pool a decent size and warm enough. Unlike other reviewers we didn't have a problem with the children not being allowed in; there was a sign saying no under 16s but no-one seemed to bother with that rule. They didn't try going into the saunas/steam rooms but we did and they were great.
One useful point at reception was being able to order baguettes/croissants etc for breakfast the night before, which avoided the need to trek to the village. Although we were overcharged for the bread at the end of our stay, when we complained they refunded us straightaway- a genuine mistake I think.
The location of the apartment blocks were fine. Very easy to ski straight down to either Vallandry or Grizzly lift from the end of the little street (30m or so). We didn't have a problem with icy paths like some of the other reviewers- the steps and streets were fine. The apartment blocks were linked to the village below by a pedestrian path, it took about 4 mins to walk down (a few more back up). The supermarket was good and there were a few good restaurants (liked Chez Felix and Le Refuge beside the Sherpa). The Vallandry and Grizzly lifts are very handy- both take you well up the mountain and there are few queues after the first rush at 9.
We hired skis from Skiset beside reception. The service was good, but we were disappointed with the skis- one ski binding broke while up on the slopes! We managed to get back to Arc 1800 with difficulty and get a fresh pair in Skiset there, then took them back when we got back to Vallandry. They were very apologetic...

L'Oree des Cimes was a lovely place to stay. We chose a 3 bedroomed apartment, which was spacious with thoughtful decor, it was warm, cosy and well-equipped. What's more it had a wonderful view across the village and mountains. It is very close to the slopes. One the down side. The pathways around the various blocks are never cleared, so are perilously icy, including the slope to the garage, so exiting by car, except on change over day, was touch and go. The forecast had no snow all that week so there was no reason not to clear the ice. The other best/worst aspect is the pool/espace de bien etre. Beautifully designed. The pool was cold. There's a large 'warm tub' - bigger than a hot tub, but less hot. Lovely, except that those few hours apres ski only, nobody under 15 was allowed in. We were a group of families with teens and pre teens. The place was almost empty every day, despite it being UK half term, so it wasn't that they'd have disturbed anybody, or crowded them out. There's a number of saunas too. Again, during the day anybody can use the facility, but from 5-8 nobody under 18 can go in. totally mad, as the pool was too cold to stay in for more than a few minutes. Similar madness with the lovely lounges above reception- all locked up by 8pm! So we felt we didn't get our money's worth from the facilities, but...we are looking again, as the resort and apartments were lovely

Room Tip: Some blocks are closer to reception and the slopes than others.

Another great property run by CGH. We stayed at their sister location last year (L'Oree des Neiges) and loved it. This year we thought we'd try this location principally because of it's Spa facilities. There are three buildings, we stayed in Block C which is furthest away from reception. The trade off is you have to carry your bags up the hill to get to it when you arrive - may be frustrating if you have young children, fortunately I've got two "willing" grown up children! But once there you put your skis on at the front door and ski to the Grizzly chair lift - perfect! If you've stayed at a CGH apartment you know what you are getting, modern, well-equipped, clean and tastefully decorated. This is our 6th or 7th visit to one of their facilities. The Spa is excellent and when we went was very quiet. Good Gym, saunas, steam rooms, pool and jacuzzi.

Service was good, you can't always say that in France! We hired skis from the Skiset shop attached to the hotel. I agree with other reviewers that the selection is small but our skis were of good enough quality and the service we got was good.

Peisey Vallandry is a quiet resort, it's attraction is the closeness of the Cable Car which links Les Arcs with La Plagne ski areas. There's a great apres ski bar next to the apartments called Mont Blanc Bar which proved very popular with our party.

Happy skiing!

Room Tip: Block C is closest to the ski lift and is true ski in/ski out, but be prepared to carry your bags up...

We stayed here for a week in one of the apartments which sleeps up to 10 - we were told that this meant 4 bedrooms plus sofa beds for 2. We were a party of 8 and assumed that each couple would therefore have a bedroom with a door, however, the 3rd and 4th bedrooms are upstairs with one being a proper bedroom and the other open plan on the mezzanine. Not ideal. The rest of the apartment was lovely, quite spacious, though quite squashed when we all wanted a comfortable seat rather than a dining chair.

The staff in reception were very welcoming - and although we arrived early we were able to check in after a ten minute wait. The spa facilities are nice and there is a lovely pool.

My biggest complaint (and this has been the case in every French ski resort we've visited) is that no-one clears the pathways around the hotel. L'Oree des Cimes is built on the hillside and during the day you have the option of walking through the hotel and up flights of stairs outside to your apartment. At night, the reception area is closed and you have to walk round the public road, and turning off on the private road to the chalets. These roads were covered in ice when we were there, melting slightly during the day, and re-freezing at night. Two of our party fell during the daytime (one whilst wearing shoe crampons), and we saw other people fall too.

This is however definitely the best place in Peisey-Vallandry and I would go back if we were in the area.

Excellent apartments, good quality interior and fittings, great location just next to the slopes, a short walk down the hill into Vallandry village, and lovely views right across the valley.
We have stayed here twice, once in a small apartment for 6 in 2011, and the second time in a larger apartment for 10 in 2012. The small apartments are quite small, but the larger one was fine, although the seating area was a bit limited. Vallandry is in a really great location which allows you to explore the whole of the Les Arcs ski area, or you can take the Vanoise express across to La Plagne. The main village is OK but not particularly pretty.
On the comments on unhelpful staff, we have not had any problems with the staff at CGH reception.
My main piece of advice is for anyone needing to hire or buy ski equipement: please completely avoid the Skiset shop in the CGH building just 10m from the main entrance to CGH. The selection / range of skis and boots is very poor (so no choice if you pay for the more expensive and supposedly better skis), the quality of the skis at the higher end ("Excellence" and "Sensation") is poor compared to other hire companies, the staff are not very helpful, and when we had a small amount of damage to some hire skis the manager's approach was talk very fast in French and to rip his customer off for as much as he possibly can. This was despite the fact the skis had been well used for the last 2 years by many hirers, and could be easily and cheaply repaired.
Alternative ski hire shops: for anyone with a car, I recommend using the larger of the 2 Intersport shops in Plan Peisey which is only about 500m away - they have an excellent range of skis particularly at the higher end, and have a much better approach to customer service.

We stayed in a well appointed two (one twin and one double semi ensuite) bedroomed apartment with a pleasant living space and balcony. It was 2 minutes walk from the Grizzly chairlift which provides easy access into the Les Arcs part of the huge Paradiski area and to the Vanoise Express cablecar into La Plagne. There is a good size ski and boot locker for each apartment and hotel guests can use the spa with pool, sauna, steam room and gym. The apartment could sleep 6. We were 5 adults so one slept in the living area but there was plenty of room to store kit and bedding out of the way during the day. The lively Mont Blanc bar serving good food is 2 minutes walk away and there are several decent restaurants in the village which is a 5-10 minute walk down the hill.

Room Tip: Ask about a south facing balcony in a block not too far up the hill.
