Fe's Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 3 Tulelake B&B and Inns
Reviewed 6 August 2013

My father and I wanted to visit the Modoc Caves and see an area of Oregon and California that we hadn’t seen before so we needed a place to stay that was closer than Klamath Falls. There are only three places to stay in Tulelake, and I’m very glad we decided on Fe’s B&B. We found her place to be very comfortable, clean, and homey. We were also lucky to get the entire upstairs to ourselves, so the privacy was quite a treat. It was so much better than a tiny hotel room, and Fe’s breakfasts were really wonderful. Fe is an exceptional hostess, and we enjoyed some very interesting and pleasant conversation with her. She is such a kind woman and so caring. Even though Tulelake itself seems like a deserted town, that wasn’t a problem for us because we were there for the caves and to explore the surrounding areas and sites, not spend time in stores shopping. Although there are no adequate restaurants in the little town itself, you can still find a fantastic place on hwy 139 just 5 miles from Fe’s B&B called Captain Jack’s Stronghold Restaurant. We ate there both evenings. The service was great, and the people were very friendly. They make everything from scratch, and it was very delicious and filling. I would highly recommend Fe’s B&B to anyone who wants to visit that area and see the sites. Thank you, Fe, for being such a wonderful hostess and making us feel so at home!

Fe' is a very helpful host. The rooms are clean and the very hearty breakfast is good. She is a great host. There are very few places in Tulelake that are still in business, and Fe is very hel[ful at giving advice on where to get something you need.

I work in the region and always stay at Fe's excellent B&B, the food is excellent and rooms very comfortable. Birding in the area is excellent all year long and ending the day at Fe's makes an excellent trip. Fe's is an excellent host, having stayed in KFalls and down in Alturas this is the best and most convenient place for local birding, caving and native american history along with recent history ( the Tulelake Japanese interment camp). And if you have to work in the region like I do this is a great place to stay.

Fe is a wonderful, generous person. She is incredibly warm and helpful. The rooms were very comfortable. The dining and living room area were nothing special but this is clearly as good as it gets in this small town.

This B&B received very high ratings and we were a little surprised. It’s like staying in someone’s modest home built in 1970. Fe was very, very nice host but her house needs some updating. She kept it clean and the breakfast was ok (no choices, everyone gets the same thing). We stayed in one of the upper bedrooms, bed was large and comfortable. We could hear the cars going down main street. There isn’t central air, one window unit in the living room. Shared bathrooms, there were two available both upstairs. Don’t be misled by the other reviews, this is not 4 or 5 stars (although Fe was a 5 star host). The outside had a lot of “stuff” in the yard (boats, boat motors, cars). The town is very much “down on their luck”. Not much to pick from for restaurants, on Monday night we had to eat at the ice-cream place. This was about 25min. drive to lava beds national park. If you want to stay close to the park you don’t have many choices. I think this is a fine place for one night.

Room Tip: There were 3 rooms upstairs, and a few more downstairs (lower level). The kitchen, living room and...

Fe is very helpful and friendly but that can't make up for what is at best an average environment. The rooms are very worn, tired looking and outdated. Bathrooms are shared and could easily use a few more towel racks and places to stake out a small claim to leave your soap, shampoo, and hand towel (which could also use updating). The bed in our room could use a new mattress as support was not great. Fe makes an adequate, though not gourmet, hot breakfast and can cater to specific diets. It's a great location to visit Lava Beds, however, and there are not many choices in the area.

We spent a couple of weeks exploring the Volcanic Scenic Highway including stays at Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta. When we arrived at Tule Lake we were shocked to see how distressed the poor little town was considering all of the beautiful surrounding farm land. However, the town was clean and Fe's B&B was wonderful! She had helmets for us to use when we went to the caves at Lava Beds and was the most gracious hostess. We enjoyed visiting with her family including her sweet son Robert. Fe made us feel at home after hiking through caves all day, looking at petroglyphs and birdwatching. Fe's breakfast was delicious and kept us full until late in the day! The bedroom was comfortable and we would not hesitate to come again (one gentleman that was staying there came every year and there was a group that comes for their class reunion every year). The whole area is so interesting and I am surprised there are not more visitors due to all of the great things to do.
