Henry Doorly Zoo is one of the top zoos in the U.S. and well worth the visit. Over the past 40 years they have continually upgraded it. The site is hilly and huge, so be aware there will be lots of walking and pushing a stroller can get tiring. However the large size lets the zoo absorb lots of people on busy summer weekends.

The zoo can be expensive, so check on prices before planning your trip. See admission fees below. There is also an IMAX Theater within the zoo and, at some additional expense, that can be a good way to rest and cool off after a long day of walking in the summer. They get lots of great shows. Check on show times upon entering the zoo and get tickets early on busy days. They also have lower admission fees with other reciprocal zoos in the U.S.

This is an amazing zoo. The displays and enrichment provided for the animals make for a very natural experience for the visitor. I do wish they would get all the big cats into bigger environments with more appropriate settings, but otherwise, the zoo's newest exhibits are top-notch. My favorite is the Kingdoms of the Night under the Desert Dome - it really does feel like you're walking through a bayou or swamp at night...without the fear of accidentally stepping on and getting bitten by a snoozing cottonmouth.

Omaha's Zoo and Aquarium are a tremendously entertaining and educational attraction, for both young and old. To see it all would take most of the day, but visitors can enjoy themselves immensely even if you only have 2 or 3 hours by selecting one or two major attractions, such as the Lied Jungle, the Desert Dome, the aquarium, the Butterfly Building, the Skyfari lift, the Aviary, the children's petting zoo, the Garden of the Scents, the train, the Bear Canyon, the Madagascar exhibit, the Gorilla Valley, or just to roam the zoo at a leisurely pace. There is a lot of shade, and seating, as well as a number of refreshment areas. The zoo is open year round, but spring and fall are the best times to go. Weekends can be very crowded, but it is a large complex, and can easily accommodate 5,000 or more visitors without seeming crowded.
