The chicken sandwich was amazing. They have terrific sweet tea! One of the best places I have been to in Omaha.

This was my husband and I's second visit to Big Mama's and it was as good as we remember but the service managed to get better (nit that it was bad before)! My husband is a big fan of fried chicken so he ordered the smothered chicken and I almost had to stop him from licking the plate. Their special that day was chicken & seafood gumbo. It was so tasty! We also had a side of okra with plum sauce. Everything was delicious and I can't wait to go back for more. Plus, our server was a joy. She was talkative and friendly and when our food came she let us be so we could quietly slip into our food coma.
Just went here today for the first time with my husband and my friend and we all loved it! The restaurant is located in the former cafeteria of the old Nebraska School for the Deaf campus in north-central Omaha. The dining room is very warm and inviting, decorated with the owner's ("Big Mama" Patricia Barron) family photos and checkered tablecloths and flowers in vases on every table. The staff was friendly and inviting, especially our waiter Derek, a very affable young man who was eager to recommend menu suggestions. My husband and friend had the oven-fried chicken while I had the meatloaf. Despite being homemade and cooked to order, our food was served surprisingly quickly. An added touch of Southern charm is the fact the drinks are served in Mason jars. The food was delicious, we could not recommend it enough. The chicken was cooked just right and the collard greens were scrumptious as was the corn bread. Save room for dessert because you will die and go to heaven with the apple crisp or sweet potato cheesecake. It was creamy, not overly rich or sweet and refreshing. We will definitely be making a return trip, most likely to try the breakfasts, which from looking at the menu, sound wonderful as well.
This restaurant is less than a mile from a friend's house and I was there last weekend, so I bought lunch. We were packing things for a move, so I thought we'd order takeout and go back home. She made the chicken fresh, which was good. But the entire trip from door to door was about 50 minutes! Still, the chicken made up for the wait. Just be aware that it may not move quickly. I arrived at 1:00pm, after the lunch crowd and I believe they close at 2:00pm, so I can't blame them for not having chicken sitting around getting cold.
The women in the dining room were friendly. Sitting there for awhile, I had time to notice they kept drinks full, engage in nice chatting and they made sure we knew we hadn't been forgotten.
This chicken was flavorful and delicious without being spicy or greasy. We also got sweet potato pudding and mac & cheese. Both were very good choices. I could eat much too much of the sweet potato mudding. My friend's husband loved the mac & cheese.
While in town on business, an Omaha local suggested this place and he took us for lunch. It's in an odd location in an old school cafeteria, but don't let that fool you; the food is wonderful. I would highly recommend this place because of the decent prices and the heart stopping comfort food. I had the oven fried chicken with a side of sweet potato pudding. Wow on the pudding! The sweet potato cheesecake is worth trying too. The nice touch was when Big Mama graced us by moving over to say hello.
