Returned to Sissi Bay because we liked the resort. However standards have clearly slipped since last year. The common refrain from many other guests was "This is NOT 4 star".
Booked a room with a sea view. The room was cleaned daily apart from Sunday. Linen changed every other day. The room smelled of bleach when it was done; however the small number of cleaners have too much to do. There were cobwebs in the corners, surfaces not touched, dust under the beds. Not surprising when the cleaners start at 7.30 cleaning round the pools and finish about 4.00pm.
The dining room is the biggest shambles disorganised; food trays not being replenished, items running out. We tried going down for dinner at different times e.g . 6.30pm. 7.00; 7.30 8.00 and 8.15. If you go early you may not be able to find a seat in the dining room and if you sit outside you have people all around you smoking whilst you are trying to eat.
Or if you go down after 8.00 you have to take pot luck with what food and desserts are.left. Last night the desserts apart from jelly and waffles ran out at 8.15 despite the resraurant supposedly being open until 9.00. The menus are odd and not much fresh vegetables are on offer and forget any 'special dìets' it won't happen.
We were half board and the prices for drinks are not displayed. However we soon learned that the drinks in the hotel are dearer than the surrounding bars and restaurants.
Unfortunately Monarch collapsed during our stay. It did not affect us but other guests who had paid for holidays, were distressed it did not help that hotel staff were asking guests to pay at least €350 for their accomodation another family were asked for over €1000. Piling undue pressure on people who were already worried about getting home.
To sum up: very different from last year .

Just returned from our weeks holiday at Sissi Bay Hotel !
Everything we could wish for !
Hotel clean .. staff helpful and friendly but not intrusive !
We were HB .. which meant we didn't feel 'tied' to the hotel .. food was fresh and plentiful .. and the staff worked tirelessly ..
location was perfect .. yes on edge of town .. but a pleasant stroll into town and the harbour one way or to the beach the other way ! Roads unmade .. so be cautious !
Our favourite bit .. the 'cocktail of the day!' not to be missed !
And Cretan night .. a must !
Hotel right next door to The Jolly Roger .. definitely not to be missed !Overall .. I would recommend this hotel for an authentic Cretan holiday in a great location with amazing hard working, friendly staff !
Thank you Sissi Bay .. x

..First i would like to strongly disagree with some of the comments i read about the Sissi bay particularly regarding the staff being rude?. The staff we talked to, and we talked to most of them were fantastic. They were polite, charming, formative, funny, hard working and always up for a laugh ,especially Jim,Evelyn,Kara,Angelos and the brilliant Avraam...Anyway back to the Sissi, When we arrived we were asked because we were related would we like a family and we said that would be fine so the chap at the reception gave us free A/C, safe and towels!! The hotel in our opinion is a very chilled and quite place to have a holiday as the views and walks are spectacular. The food was very good, hot and plenty and different every night we eat (14). The food at lunch was just as good, as was the breakfast. The rooms were spotless and cleaned every day. So all in all a very good place. Efcharisto Sissi Bay....

Room Tip: ...The quietness of the place...

Sissi Bay Hotel and Spa, situated at the edge of Sissi. We arrived Midnight after a 2 hour transfer, it really didn't need to be this long, as was only 45km from airport.
The reception staff were friendly, checked in quickly, shown to our rooms, and given a voucher to go to Tropical Bar for a cold plate of food.
Aggelos in the Tropical Bar is a very lively lad, he's very good with the guests. Tropical Bar also has big screen for the football, they show different games most nights.
Our room was 607, which is on ground floor with a view of the sea, the room was exceptionally clean, the beds very comfortable, with a bath and a shower over the bath,(sometimes the water was cold at night so he quick to get washed). Our cleaner Fanny, was amazing, she was friendly, always had a lovely smile for us and a cheerful Kalimara.
She kept our room spotless.
The food in the restaurant was ok, there was something each meal time that we could eat, the choice wasn't huge but there was usually something for us to have. Johanna, and Edi, the waiting staff we had were very good at their jobs and friendly towards us.
The Mare Bar was nearest to our room, Jim and Nicos where the bar staff, they where cheerful and helpful when we needed to know what was what.
Antonia from the Spa was a lovely sweet girl, the massage she gave was first class. Definitely worth the € for this. Unfortunately her engagement ring was stolen from the Spa while she was with a customer... this saddens me as she is such a kind lovely lady. I hope they get whoever took it and get it back to her. I wish her well in the future.
There was plenty of sun beds we had some right outside our apartment, which was ideal, If your a family use the pools above the Tropical Bar they're more suited to kids.
We ate out a couple of times at Anatoli Restaurant just down the street from the hotel, it's a family run restaurant, the food is DELICIOUS, the staff are fabulous. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant.
Sissi is a small town, with a few gift shops, a number of harbour tavernas, it's a chilled out place with not much to do.
The Bofous Beach is to the right of the hotel down the dirt track road, the sun beds are €8 for 2 beds per day. There is a cafe here.
The Happy Train with Gorge is a good day out. He takes you to a monastery, there is a lot of steps up to this but once there it's stunning. He then takes you through the beautiful Cretan countryside into his home village of Vrachasi, it was quintessential Cretan, with its whitewashed houses, steep streets, its square with the taverna, and the Greek Orthodox Church was absolutely stunning, I've never seen art work in a church as beautiful before. Gorge was very informative about the place he held dearest. This trip was well worth the €18
The Jolly Roger is next door to the hotel, it's a popular bar,it has live bands and quiz nights. If you want more lively night life Mali is a short trip away, order taxi from reception.
All In all Sissi Bay Hotel and Spa is a lovely place, it's very chilled out, so if it's peace and quiet you want with no entertainment come here.

This was our 5th visit and we had the red carpet treatment. The staff and managers are excellent people and nothing is too much. The room was cleaned every day and bed made every day sometimes decorated. Both Mare bar and Tropical have great staff, Kara, Nikos, Avram, Angelos all great fun. Dina the manageress was attentive to everyone's needs. Ritza on reception welcomed us with open arms and the new girl Sonia who worked throughout the hotel. Tonia and Anastasia at the spa too. There are too many nice people to mention xx we will be back again and again. Also Natalie.
It has always our hearts ❤️❤️❤️
