“Nice View”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

Beautiful environment and nice view from the room.

The room needs a renovation and the cleanliness could be better. Bathroom was somewhat small. The hotel staff mentioned that they will renovate the rooms this winter.

The bed, pillows, bed linen/towels and bathroom amenities were all quite good which make up for the outdated room.

The breakfast experience was wonderful. Food was good and view was fantastic.

Location was conveniently located a bit outside town (however need a car or long walk to get to town). Very near the hotel is the famous 'Bella Vraka' beach which is a must see.
This can be accessed by walking from the Domotel via Syvota Retreat and down to Bella Vraka.

I have just returned to Denmark from a 1-week memorable and extraordenary holiday with 2 friends at the highly recommendable Hotel ”Agios Nikolaos”, Sivota, Greece, with only 1 regret in my pocket: I wish I had booked for way more than 1 week!! Must come back again!

At our late arrival to the hotel we were already met with a hospitality and service unexpected, and we hardly couldn’t wait to wake up in the morning, go to the balcony and see and feel the new environment to be surrounded by the following week. And ohhhh my …. everything was worth waiting for – everything!! Breathtaking is my word covering it all.
Almost didn’t make it to the first breakfast buffet because of the outstanding view and atmosphere everywhere I went (and I loooooove a good breakfast buffet ;0) ) Glad I did though – all I could wish for and even more – my own freshly made omelet e.g.

Found out that the views and exceptional good feeling didn’t disappear up in thin air or promising post card pictures fading – on the contrary – and the place grew on me for every second I stayed.
Every meal (breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner) in this amazing and authentic hotel can be enjoyed with an open view to this magnificent nature with all its clear aqua colours, vegetation in every green shade, various fine flowers and swallows nesting everywhere …. soo full of life and beauty … and still with a calmness to sooth your soul.

All this given by nature we found ourselves adding the presence of and service when needed by a staff quite beyond the ordinary. EVERYBODY we met or had a conversation with were SO friendly, helpfull, warm and caring people. Very professional in their job! But more than that – not ”just” performing perfectly in a uniform and doing an outstanding job! (which they did, too ;-) ) – they actually seemed to love and live their job, were very observant in a caring way, very helpful and really doing their very best to make you feel comfortable – with a very fine sense of balance in their meeting with every single guest. Actually, during all my earlier travels I personally as a guest have never experienced anything as genuine and in harmony as in this place.

We Enjoyed dinner at the restaurant several times and found it innovative with respect for good ingredients, flavours and Greek cuisine. Especially the surprice we were spoiled with – I will NEVER forget that!!! Personally, I do not go to e.g. Greece to experience a piece of my home country but to meet Greece, and this is what you will find here at Agios Nikolaos. Thank you for staying Greek ;-)
You can find disco’s, schedule hundreds of activities, ”party party” etc. everywhere now (which btw. could be added and arrangended for by choice from here as well), BUT … you cannot find a base of calmness, a balance, a beauty, a silence, an authentic and genuine warmth and hospitality from the staff surrounding you as here at Agios Nikolaos everywhere in the world! This place is a Piece of Paradise on Earth<3 And this place and its people fulfilled from their part all of my dreams and wishes for this holiday.

From my heart I thank everyone of you (if reading this, too ;-) ) – in particular Socrates and Costas! - so sorry that I’m so bad at remembering everyones names (but I remember your personalities;-) ) and didn’t get to learn more Greek before arriving. Thankful for you receiving us with great English skills as well ;-D Any management and guest should feel lucky and grateful in my opinion. I highly recommend a visit here to all future travellers/guests.

All the best from Lise Groenning

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Agios Nikolaos. Touted as one of the better hotels in the region by our travel agency, we selected it for the relatively low prices and, let's be honest, the pretty pictures. We arrived on a warm night, and didn't see the surroundings properly until the next morning. And boy, when we did...

Our room was located in a small building halfway up a cliffside with a breathtaking view over one of the iconic coves. One could spend an entire day just sitting in the sun and looking at small boats as they made their way to and from Syvota proper. So we did. We used the hotel's restaurant a few times, and found it to be good value for money, with a more adventurous selection of dishes than most of the local restaurants could provided. The private beach was small but cozy, and had the benefit of having a bar right next to it.
The real star of the show for us, however, turned out to be the poolside bar, which was sparsely populated by day, and all but desolate at night, owing to the relatively few people staying at the hotel. The bartender, a very sociable young man by the name Socrates, had excellent English skills and served an impressive selection of colorful drinks. And he was good at it, too. Not a day went by that we didn't find ourselves ending up in his company, sharing stories and drinking masterfully mixed cocktails.

I can't put my fingers on any real downsides to the Agios Nikolaos, but you must be prepared to make your way up and down a quarter of a billion stairs to get anywhere. And while there was nothing wrong with our room at all, it didn't feel like a luxury resort, either. We didn't mind any of this, and had a beautiful, eventful and memorable honeymoon. And if you read this, Socrates, so long and thanks for all the drinks!

To start, the views are absolutely amazing and the two bedroom suite was huge. In addition the personnel is friendly.

But this is were the positve news stops. I stayed at this hotel a couple of days during the first week of October and it was obvious that this hotel was in the process of closing down.

The hotel grounds

The general upkeep of the hotel grounds was not good. Pine tree needles were lying around everywhere and were not swept on a daily basis. The garden bed in front of our cabin had seen better days and the bushes could use some trimming. Bald spots on the lawn and plants missing everywhere (see photo’s). The hotel beach can be reached through various stairs. One of them was crumbling and looked dangerous. I also noticed that iron rods were lying next to the beach chairs. The beach is small but nice. Unfortunately, it is littered with old construction waste (broken tiles and bricks). I do not understand why the hotel staff do not make an effort to clean this as it took me only a couple of minutes a day to collect the biggest stuff.

The room

There is no central airconditioning but noisy appliances in each room. In my view that is not appropriate for a hotel in this category. Be that as it may what is really unacceptable is that the filters of one of the devices was really dirty and had obviously not been cleaned in quite some time.

The room did not contain any folder that explained what amenities the hotel had on offer. After enquiring I was told that this this was deliberate. Given that it was end of season and the contents of the folder no longer reflected what was on offer a decission was made to remove the folders. Strange! Why accept bookings for this hotel in October if you can not offer the same level of service to your guests.

Wifi was slow, really slow. Our room had two flatscreen tv’s in each bedroom but none in the living room area. The selection of tv stations was limited to the major Greek ones (with bad to really bad reception) a German station and an Italian one. The channel overview on the tv mentioned that BBC1 and BBC World was also on offer but these channels were nowhere to be found.

The bathrooms look dated and the joints between the tiles look a bit moldy. The shower cabin has a glass door but can contain the water so there is also a shower curtain.

Restaurants

The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast in an area with amazing views. The food is ok, with an average selection of breakfast staples. I have stayed in another hotel of the Domotel group and they obviously make more of an effort to serve a good breakfast.

Most of the other restaurants of the hotel were closed in October. I have had lunch twice in the restaurant located next to the swimming pool. The food was good but the choices very limited. When asking why that was the waiter responded that the greengrocer had not made its delivery and this excuse was used twice(!!).

On one of the evenings I tried eating in the hotel as well but was told that I could only order pizza or pasta as there was an issue with the kitchen. I left the restaurant and complained at the reception to be told that they were not aware of any issues but that they were going to look into it. Never received any feedback.

Accessibility

The hotel offers great views but that comes at a price. It is build on a hill and as a result their are hight differences across the hotel grounds. If you have reduced mobility that could be an issue. The hotel does offer sufficient parking space for the car that you will need as getting to the village of Syvota by foot can be challenging.

All in all my stay in this hotel was a bit of a let down. Amazing views do not make up for all the shortcomings of this hotel. That is sad as the hotel has all the ingredients to become a truly amazing hotel. The hotels management should talk to their colleagues at the Domotel Les Lazaristes to get some tips on how to improve the current situation.

Truly amazing location, so long as you are fairly fit and able bodied. Lovely rooms which were kept nice and clean. All the staff were friendly and wanted to help.
The only thing that lets this hotel down is it's food variation. Breakfast is buffet style, using standard containers for keeping the hot food hot, shame they didn't use two candles underneath them which is the amount required to keep the food hot. That said the food was very good, excellent fresh bread and delightfully strong coffee, although this is of course dependent on individual taste. Only had one lunch, so can't really comment much on that. Evening meal was an epic 4 course dining, shame it was let down by the repetition, but again the actual food quality was very high.

The hotel is in a great location overlooking a beautiful bay and small islands of Sivota. The rooms and facilities are spacious but we were disappointed with the overall standard of the hotel and some of which fell short of the four star standard. Sivota village is not to be missed with a wide range of bars and restaurants overlooking the harbour, pure delight watching the sunset with a G&T at the Bamboo Place. Favourite beaches are along the coast and a car journey away at Mega Ammos .
